Tyler Stafflinger recorded his first collegiate win and senior
Bryan Haberstroh earned his second save of the season as the Highlanders defeated Chicago State, 7-2, on the final day of the Perfect Game Tournament held at Lake Point Sports Complex.
For the Highlanders (2-4), freshman Stafflinger (1-0) picked up his first collegiate win, facing 22 batters in six innings with four strikeouts and only letting up three hits.
Brad Moore picked up the loss for the Cougars (3-4), in three innings pitched more gave up three runs, one earned and posted three strikeouts.
Evan Pietronico went 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI, 1B
Michael Anastasia went 2-for-4 with two RBi's and SS
Justin Etts added two RBI's in the win.
The Cougars scored their first run in the first, an unearned run, when Jacob Vanitvelt stole home.
The Highlanders answered back with an RBI single from LF Pietronico that scored
Matthew Cocciadiferro, in the bottom of the first.
In the third, NJIT added on two more runs.
With bases loaded and one out Etts reached first on a fielder's choice advancing
Johnny Malatesta, and Pietronico and scoring RF Cocciadiferro on a throwing error.
The next Highlander batter, Anastasia grounded out to second base, scoring Pietronico and giving NJIT the 3-1 lead.
NJIT piled on three more runs in the fifth, starting with a double by Etts that scored two more runs, and another double by Anastasia that scored Etts.
Tom Brady finished the scoring for the Highlanders in the fifth with an RBI single, extending the NJIT lead 7-1.
The Cougar's scored one more run in the eighth off a wild pitch for the final 7-2 score.

Bryan Haberstroh earned the save in the win, throwing three innings and giving up only one run in the eighth.
Next up for the Highlanders is North Carolina Central for a double-header in Durham, NC on March 4 starting at 1pm.
