DURHAM, NC—NC Central junior Dominic Cuevas hit a walkoff single to edge the Highlanders, 4-3, in game one and won the nightcap, 7-3, taking the doubleheader sweep from visiting NJIT on Saturday at Durham Athletic Park.
The two teams will conclude the three-game series on Sunday at 1pm.
Game One
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth and two out, Dominic Cuevas drove in the game-winning run with a single up the middle, scoring Carter Williams, who started off the inning with a single down the left field line and held on for a 4-3 victory in game one.
NC Central used four pitchers to secure the victory as the Eagles fourth pitcher, Justice Sampson picked up his fourth win of the season, pitching the final inning of the game and fanning one Highlander.
The Eagles first pitcher, Christian Gonnelli went 5.1 inning, letting up four hits, two runs (both earned) and striking out five.
NJIT also used four pitchers in the game, with the loss being credited against relief pitcher
John Saviano (0-2), who pitched 2.0 innings, giving up three hits, one run while fanning four Eagles.
In a no-decision for starter Sean Lubreksi, the junior righty pitched 6.0 innings, giving up five hits, two runs while striking out four batters.
NC Central 2B Corey Joyce went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored while SS Dominc Cuevas finished 2-for-5, including the walkoff single in the bottom of the ninth. 3B Ellington Hopkins drove in one run in the game, finishing 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
NJIT's RF Cocciadiferro recorded his first collegiate homerun in the top of the sixth, going 2-for-5 while 2B
Tom Brady finished 1-for-4 with one RBI for the Highlanders.
The Highlanders struck first in the top of the second inning, with two out when
Cody Kramer doubled down the third base line and
Bryan Haberstroh followed with a single to left field, putting running on the corners. With Jesse Uttendofrer up to bat, NJIT's Kramer stole home, putting the Highlanders ahead, 1-0.
NC Central went ahead in the bottom of the fifth with two runs on three hits. Evan Holland got things going for the home team, singling through the left side followed by a double down the right field line by Carter Williams. Corey Joyce drove in a pair of runs with a double of his own down the left field line, giving the Eagles a 2-1 lead.
NJIT scored a run in the top of the sixth on an RBI double to right field by
Tom Brady, as the Highlanders tied the game at 2-2 and regained the lead in the top of the seventh on a home run by freshman Matt Cocciadiferro, his first of his collegiate career, for a 3-1 advantage.
The Eagles answered with a run of their own in the bottom 7 on an RBI single from Hopkins, scoring Joyce, who reached base with a single to center field, pulling within one of the visitors, 3-2.
Game Two
The Highlanders scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning on a double to center field by
Johnny Malatesta, scoring
Jesse Uttendorfer and
Evan Pietronico, putting the Highlanders ahead early, 2-0.
NC Central added a run in the bottom second on a homerun by Conrad Kovalcik and the Eagles would put up a run in the third and fourth inning to tie the game at 3-3, heading into the bottom of the fifth.
The Eagles broke open the game in the bottom of the fifth, as four Eagles crossed the plate for a 7-3 advantage.
NC Central's Devin Sweet earned the win, improving to 1-1 on the season, pitching 5.1 innings in the schedule seven-inning contest. Sweet struck out nine Highlanders, letting up only four hits on three runs (two earned). Relief pitchers Marcus Washburn and Ryan Decker pitched a scoreless and hitless sixth and seventh inning.
The Eagles 1B Zach Michalski drove in three runs, going 1-for-3 while Kovalcik went a perfect 4-for-4 with one RBI and two runs followed by a 3-for-3 performance by CF Evan Holland, who scored and drove in one run for the Eagles.
NJIT's third pitcher of the game, freshman
Aquib Ramkishun (0-1) was credited with the loss, pitching one inning, giving up three hits and four Eagle runs. Senior RHP
Rex MacMillan kept the Eagles scoreless in the final 1.1 innings, letting up two hits, facing six batters.

Brett Lubreski started the game for the Highlanders, pitching the first 3.0 innings, giving up five hits on just two runs.
