NEWARK, NJ
– NJIT men's swimming and diving started off the 2017-18 season with a 164-98 loss to Binghamton on Saturday afternoon.

"'I'm really proud of our team for being competitive against a strong Binghamton squad," noted head coach Michael Lawson, "we look forward to what the rest of the season has in store."

The loss comes with high points, as three Highlander newcomers placed in the top three of their respective events.

JT Morehead earned two first place finishes in the distance events. Freshman Morehead crushed his competition in the 1000 free coming in at 10:15.78, 17 seconds faster than second place Binghamton swimmer Andrew Holzman.

Morehead then grabbed first place in the 500 free with a time of 4:56.32, with teammate Matheus Monteiro Montarroyos finishing behind him at 4:59.27.

Senior Montarroyos tallied a win of his own in the 200 free coming in at 1:47.74, out touching Binghamton's Max Willard by .12 of a second.

Nicholas Lyons competed in his first meet for NJIT after redshirting last season. Lyons racked up some wins, coming in first in the 100 breast (59. 49), 200 breast (2:12.68) and placed third in the 200 IM (2:05.72) behind teammate Scott Quirie.

Another newcomer, Mattheau Bonner grabbed a second place finish in the 100 fly swimming in 53.36 and a third place in the 200 fly with a time of 1:59.39.

The Highlanders finished in the top three in both medley events. Starting off the meet in the 400 medley, Quirie, Lyons, Bonner and Montarroyos placed second swimming in 3:33.43. Ending the meet was the 200 free relay, where Andres De La Rosa, Jake Haefner, Tyler Pollock and Jack Matusiak notched third place clocking in at 1:29.28.

Joining Morehead, Lyons, Bonner, De La Rosa, and Haefner in appearing in the water for NJIT for the first time were Alex Bjelis, Jake Donofrio, and Jeremiah Sanchez.

The Highlanders will host Mount St. Mary's (MD) and Saint Peter's on October 14th for a 10pm meet start time in the Fleisher Athletic Center.
