Men’s Tennis Records First A-Sun Win in Season Finale; Tops USC Upstate, 5-2

The NJIT men's tennis team grabbed its first Atlantic Sun Conference victory of the season Saturday, defeating USC Upstate 5-2 in the season finale for the Highlanders at The Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility.

NJIT, in its first season competing in the Atlantic Sun Conference, concludes the 2015-16 season 1-5 in the conference and 10-8 overall.  Seniors Markus Schultz, Arnaud Holl and Andres Alban, playing in their final collegiate match were recognized in pregame ceremonies.

"Congrats to the team and our three seniors," head coach Ira Miller commented after the Highlanders recorded their first A-Sun victory. "We started off playing great in the doubles and never gave back the momentum.  Every starter contributed to at least one of the five points we won. Great send off for Markus (Schultz), Andres (Alban) and Arnaud (Holl), who finish their college career in grand fashion."

USC Upstate (7-13, 3-3 in A-Sun) will be the fourth-seed in the 2016 Atlantic Sun Conference Tennis Championships, which will be hosted by the Spartans on April 22-24 in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

The Highlanders swept the doubles contests to earn that point and added four singles victories to grab the team's first A-Sun victory, 5-2.

Senior tandem Schultz and Holl won convincingly, 6-1, at the first spot, topping Ramon Simonetti and Ankush Arora.  Holl, a double winner on the day, won in straight sets at fourth singles, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) over Lenard haupt.

Highlander duo Alban and Richard Rangga combined for a 6-3 victory at second doubles, defeating Jamie Yates and Rajanvir Dharni.  Rangga won a three-set tilt at the sixth spot, 2-6, 6-2, 11-9 over Dharni.

NJIT's Jan Cimrman battled out a three-set victory at second singles, 4-7, 6-4, 7-5 against Arora.

Freshman Lukas Zvikas was a straight set winner at fifth singles, 7-5, 6-2, topping Ignacio Garrido.
