Slow Start Dooms Highlander Women in Senior Night Loss to Stetson

Video Highlights

NEWARK, NJ
—Visiting Stetson built a 16-4 lead over NJIT after one quarter in Atlantic Sun Conference women's basketball and the Hatters, who led from start to finish, never allowed their lead to get under seven in the second quarter or under 12 in the second half on the way to a 74-56 victory in the Fleisher Athletic Center on NJIT's Senior Night.

The victory was the 300th career win as a head coach for Lynn Bria of Stetson and the Hatters raised their 2015-16 record to 16-9 overall and 7-4 in the Atlantic Sun. NJIT is 1-10 in its first season as a member of the A-Sun and 4-22 overall.

Breana Bey, a product of nearby Jersey City had a strong game for Stetson playing in front of a contingent of family members and friends, with a team-leading 15 points and 8 rebounds, plus a game-high 5 steals. Bey, a junior, is in her first season at DeLand, FL-based Stetson after two years of junior college ball at Monroe College in the Bronx.

Brianti Saunders added 14 points and McKenna Beach, the reigning A-Sun Newcomer of the Week in women's basketball, chipped in 13 points and a game-best 4 assists for the winning Hatters.

High scoring honors went to NJIT's Olivia Dudley, who collected 16 points, 13 of which came in the second half.

Ronni Grandison, honored in pregame ceremonies as NJIT's only senior, finished with 14 points, and junior Camerin Spahn had one of the best all-around games, producing her first career double-double on 10 points and 10 rebounds, while also blocking 3 shots.

The Highlanders made just two of 14 shots from the floor in managing their meager four first-quarter  points, while two Hatters scored four each and two others scored three for Stetson, which shot 7-for-13 in the opening period.

The Highlanders found their range for 16 points in the second quarter, but Stetson scored 19 in its own right and combined with the 16-4 first quarter, the Hatters held a 35-20 advantage through two quarters.

The closest NJIT got to the lead was 18-11 after Spahn's layup with 6:52 remaining in the second quarter and it was a 10-point game at 25-15 after Grandison, who shot 6-for-6 at the foul line in the game, made two of them with 3:26 left in the second quarter.

However, Stetson answered Grandison's two foul shots with a 7-0 spurt capped by Sarah Sagerer's layup that made it 32-15 with 1:27 left.

The Highlanders trimmed the deficit back to 12 points, but Saunders scored three points in the last 16 seconds, staking the visitors to a 35-20 lead.

Saunders had 9 points for Stetson to lead all scorers at the half, while Grandison and Spahn each scored 6 for the Highlanders.

Stetson stretched its lead in the third quarter, but not by much, as the Hatters held a 22-19 advantage in the quarter, which was good for a 57-39 lead through three quarters.

Both teams shot well in the third quarter, as Stetson connected at a 62 percent clip from the floor (8-for-13) and NJIT shot 53 percent (8-for-15).

Taking a 57-39 lead into the fourth quarter, Stetson got what would be its biggest lead of the night, 74-54, after  Swedish freshman Ida Anderson made a 3-pointer with 30 seconds left and Olivia Dudley answered for NJIT with a layup for the final score of 74-56.

Having completed its home schedule, NJIT will close the regular season slate with three Atlantic Sun Conference away games. First up is a Saturday 1 pm game in Florida at Jacksonville.
