Women’s Fencing Earns First Two Wins of 2016-17 Season

BROOKVILLE, NY – NJIT women's fencing picked up their first two wins of the 2016-17 season at the LIU Post Invitational on Saturday.

The Highlanders defeated host LIU Post 15-12 and Wagner 19-5, and fell to Wellesley 8-19, Drew 10-17 and FDU 12-15.

Jule Shigihara competed against all five teams and won each of her bouts. The epee specialist posted a 12-3 overall record, including 3-0 wins over both Wagner and Drew.

Maria Sztan also performed well for NJIT on the epee strip. Sophomore Sztan went 9-3, also winning all of her four bouts.

On the foil strip Julia Garcia posted a 9-4 record defeating LIU, Wellesley and Wagner.

Sophomore newcomer Aubrey Watson notched a 6-3 record on the epee strip.

The Highlanders have a break until the New Year, when they compete in the Philadelphia Invitational on January 21.
