NEWARK, NJ – The NJIT men's hockey team suffered their first home loss of the season with a 5-2 loss to the Monmouth last night at Barnabas Health Hockey House.
The Hawks also sweep the season series with the Highlanders and now have a 4-0 record when playing NJIT since joining the Colonial States College Hockey Conference last season.
Monmouth started with a 2-0 lead in the first period, until
Christopher Murphy extended his team leading point scoring streak to nine games with his sixth goal of the season off a nice cross pass from
Phil Lelikov.
In the second period, the Hawks regained their two goal lead, 3-1.
Michael Barrera once again cut the deficit for the Highlanders to one goal with an assist from newcomer
Thomas Sousa, his first of the season.
NJIT was not able to capitalize on numerous power play opportunities in the third to tie the game. The Hawks scored two more goals making the final score to be 5-2.
Thomas Pyrka made 20 saves for the Highlanders.
The Highlanders next game will be against Seton Hall in West Orange on November 5 at 9:45pm.
The next home game for NJIT will be November 13, when they host Penn at 6:45pm at the Barnabas Health Hockey House.
