NJIT Athletics Mourns the Passing of Tim Camp

NEWARK, NJ— The New Jersey Institute of Technology Department of Athletics mourns the passing of Tim Camp, Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Information.

Camp joined the NJIT staff in August of 2005 following 16 years at Saint Peter's College in Jersey City, where he served as Assistant Director of Athletics for Sports Information.

He was inducted into the Saint Peter's Hall of Fame in 2008. He also received the Mike Cohen "Good Guy" Award at the 76th Annual Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association Awards Dinner on April 16, 2009.

The "Good Guy" award is honored annually to someone who has been especially friendly and helpful to the media, often going above and beyond to make their jobs easier and more pleasant.

At NJIT, Camp's responsibilities included, assisting in the administration of the athletics department, publicizing the activities of the Highlanders' 19 varsity teams, development and production of all the athletic publications, and overseeing the maintenance of the department's website.

Quotes from Colleagues
"This is a loss for the entire NJIT community," said Lenny Kaplan Assistant Vice President/Director of Athletics at NJIT. "I have known Tim for over 25 years, and knew him as a part-time consigliere, and always a friend.   He had great recall, always with a story or bit of history - he was like a walking fact/history book, uncovering obscure facts.  I can still see him sitting across from my desk or on the phone, and saying –" Lenny I have an interesting fact for you….."An old-time S.I.D. who could write game recaps or feature stories with the best of them.  He will be missed."

"I feel very fortunate to have worked with Tim at Saint Peter's College (now University)," said William (Bill) Stein former Athletic Director at Saint Peter's.  "He was a very special person, excellent writer, loved by all he met, student-athletes loved him and he loved them.  I never heard him say anything negative about anyone. He is a true friend and I will miss seeing and talking with him."

Bill recalls a time that Father James N. Loughran read the Saint Peter's men's soccer story that Tim wrote when Peacocks beat Brown (at Brown) in the 2003 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Tournament.  Father Loughran thought it was "the best sports article" he ever read and felt like he was at the game.

"Tim was loved and appreciated by so many people within the Intercollegiate Athletics and Sports Information communities," said Jeffrey Bernstein, Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Information at NYU. "He didn't have a negative bone in his body and was a completely selfless individual. His passing is very sad, but so many of us are better off for having known him and having spent time with him."
