Brown Overpowers NJIT

Post Game Interview

NEWARK, NJ – Junior forward Leah Horton scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds for NJIT, but it came in defeat, as the Highlanders women's basketball team dropped a tough 74-49 non-conference decision to Brown at the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center Monday afternoon.

Horton was the lone player to reach double figures in scoring for the Highlanders (3-11), who lost their sixth straight. Senior forward Ronni Grandison added eight points. NJIT struggled from the floor, shooting just 15-of-55 overall (27.3 percent) and 4-of-18 from 3-point range (22.2 percent).

Rebecca Musgrove paved the way for the Bears (11-2) with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Jordin Alexander added 13 points and Erika Steeves added 12 off the bench.

After the Highlanders scored the first two points of the game on a power move down low from Horton, the Bears scored the next eight en route to a 16-1 run that enabled them to take control for the rest of the afternoon.

Musgrove scored eight points during that stretch, including two 3-pointers. Janie White also had two treys in that fateful run, as Brown grabbed the 16-3 lead with 4:07 left in the first period and never looked back.

Trailing 21-8 at the end of the first quarter, NJIT managed only four points in the second quarter, as Brown held a commanding 38-12 lead at intermission.

Brown then put the game away by scoring the first nine points of the second half, taking an overwhelming 47-12 advantage just two minutes into the second half. White canned another 3-pointer to get the Bears rolling in the second half.

The Highlanders return to action Saturday afternoon when they begin play in the Atlantic Sun Conference, playing host to USC Upstate at 1 pm. The men follow with their game against USC Upstate beginning at 4 pm. It marks the first games in the new conference affiliation for NJIT.
