EASTON, PA—The combination of lightning delays and local restrictions prohibiting night play after 10:05 pm resulted in Monday night's scheduled women's soccer match between visiting NJIT and Lafayette being declared "no contest" or "postponed".
The game, which was scheduled for a 7 pm start was delayed by lightning in stoppages totaling nearly two hours when the teams attempted for the final time to resume play between 9:30 and 10 in Lafayette's Oaks Stadium.
However, another lightning strike soon halted the proceedings for the night. The teams had put 59 minutes of play in the books, short of the minimum 70 required to make the result official under NCAA playing rules.
Lafayette led 4-0 at the time of the stoppage, but none of the statistics from the game will count and the result is officially listed as "postponed". No rescheduled date was announced.
With everything Monday wiped off the record books, both teams remain with 1-0 records in the young season.
Lafayette had edged Delaware State 1-0 in its opener, while NJIT began the 2015 schedule with a 5-1 victory over Saint Peter's..
Next up for the Highlanders is a 7 pm match Friday night in West Long Branch, NJ, at Monmouth.
The Hawks (1-0) were also scheduled to play Monday night, but their contest at Loyola was pushed back to Tuesday due to severe summer storms that led to multiple lightning delays in Baltimore.
Monmouth, a longtime mid-major power in women's soccer, was the repeat Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season champion in 2014.
