The NJIT women's basketball team will open the 2015 portion of its schedule when the Highlanders visit Wofford Friday afternoon at 1pm in the Benjamin Johnson Arena.
Wofford of the Southern Conference, a first time foe for the Highlanders, will host NJIT in Spartanburg, SC, on January 2, four days after the Highlanders played at Clemson, also in South Carolina.
The Terriers, which finished 6-23, 4-14 a year ago, were selected to finish seventh out of eight teams in the 2014-15 Preseason Southern Conference Coaches' Poll. Junior guard Jordan Frazier was named to the All-Conference team, after leading Wofford in 2013-14 in scoring (13.5ppg), free throw percentage (.797) and steals (84), fifth-best in the nation at (3.0spg).
Wofford, on a four-game skid, enters Friday's game with a 3-9 overall mark, having last played on December 21 at the UNF Holiday Classic in Jacksonville, Florida, where the Terriers dropped two contests – UNF (L, 68-60) and Florida International (L, 83-75).
After hosting NJIT, Wofford will travel to North Carolina Central on January 6 before opening Southern Conference play on January 10.
Frazier, standing at 5-foot-2, is the Terriers only double-figure scorer, who is averaging 18.2ppg in 10 games, including eight starts. Frazier has started the last eight contests having scored in double-digits in all 10 games with a high of 28 vs. UNC Asheville on December 6. She also tops the team in three-point field goals made (21) and steals (36).
Junior guard Ashton Fleming is the team leader on the boards with 7.7rpg while 6-foot-2 forward Khadijah Joyner tops the team at 26 blocks.
NJIT (5-10) is coming off a 64-47 defeat at ACC opponent Clemson on December 29. The Highlanders had one double-figure scorer in the game, point guard
Alyssa Albanese, who finished with a game-high 17 points. Albanese sank a career-high 5 three-pointers while the senior's four assists also led the Highlanders.
The Highlanders have two players averaging double-figure points—senior Albanese (11.0ppg) and sophomore forward
Leah Horton (10.6ppg). Albanese also tops the team in three additional categories— assists (60), steals (18) and three-point field goals made (18) while Horton ranks first with 107 rebounds (7.1rpg). Senior center
Nicole Maticka, NJIT's all-time block leader, has a team-leading 30 blocks.
