Box Score NEWARK, NJ—Manhattan senior Aislinn McIlvenny's fifth goal in six games, scored in the 56th minute, lifted the visiting Jaspers to a 1-0 win over host NJIT in women's soccer Sunday afternoon on Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.
McIlvenny, a two-time all-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference second-team honoree, is exceptionally strong on the ball and she displayed that skill in a big way in scoring her goal Sunday
The Jaspers, now 4-2 with back-to-back 1-0 victories, gained control in the box and Emily Ude carried toward goal. The NJIT defenders got their feet in as Ude pushed forward, but couldn't separate Ude from the ball before she made a short pass ahead to McIlvennym who gained a step and broke free of the scramble for a point-blank shot she put past NJIT's
Karen David.
Sunday's loss dropped NJIT to 1-5 with consecutive home shutout losses. First, defending MAAC champion Monmouth came in and blanked the Highlanders 2-0 last Thursday night, followed by the Jaspers posting a 1-0 win. Junior goalkeeper Kristen Skonieczny, a high school teammate of McIlvenny's in the Poughkeepsie, NY, area, earned the clean sheet with one save.
NJIT sophomore
Karen David made her first college start in goal and held up well, allowing just the one goal while turning away six shots. The Highlanders also picked up two team saves, as sophomore back
Jaclyn Ward prevented a goal each time.
The total shots were a lopsided 15-2 in favor of the Jaspers and the corner kicks were 5-1 for the visitors.
NJIT actually had the better of the possession in the first half-hour, when the Highlanders got their two shots for the day, both of which were quality chances.
Carly Berdan of the Highlanders broke in on goal in the seventh minute and took a 15-yard shot that was caught by the Manhattan keeper, Skonieczny, for what would be her only save of the match.
Later, Highlander
Rebecca Tustin hit the left post on a shot from the top of the box in the 24th minute.
Manhattan, which gained more of the play in the later minutes of the opening half, got its best first-half opportunity in the 39th minute when Lauren Barton took a shot from 25 yards and barely missed, as the ball grazed the top of the crossbar.
The Jaspers dominated the second half, outshooting NJIT, 8-0, including seven shots on goal.
NJIT will conclude its three-match home stand with a 7 pm match Wednesday against Saint Peter's, the third consecutive MAAC foe on the schedule.
