NJIT Dominates St. Bonaventure on Men’s Tennis Senior Day

Holger Norregaard (front page), NJIT's only senior, marked his Senior Day with wins at second singles and second doubles vs. St. Bonaventure. Markus Schultz (above) teamed with Norregaard in doubles and then won at #1 singles, 6-1 and 6-2

NEWARK, NJ—The NJIT men's tennis team marked Senior Day with its second-consecutive 7-0 win, as the Highlanders raised their season record to 8-4, sweeping visiting St. Bonaventure on Sunday afternoon in the Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility on campus.

The Highlanders, who had been dominant to start the Winter/Spring portion of their schedule, taking four of their first five matches after returning from Winter Break, hit a rough patch with three straight losses including a pair last weekend against Buffalo and Nebraska, both ranked in the national Top 60.

But NJIT got back on track with a 7-0 win at Hofstra on March 2 and repeated that score a week later against St. Bonaventure (2-12).

The team's only senior, Holger Norregaard, came through with two wins on Sunday, teaming with Markus Schultz for an 8-3 win at second doubles and then winning second singles against Bona's Elliott Fanshel, 7-5, 6-1. Norregaard and Schultz had defeated Eduardo Irrizarry and Javier Ortiz in doubles.

Norregaard, an International Business major who will turn 22 at the end of this month, was an age group national singles champion in his native Denmark in 2004.

Schultz, a sophomore, made quick work of the Bonnies' Irizaary at #1 singles, 6-1, 6-2.

The only win of the day for St. Bonaventure came in first doubles, where Ramazan Nureev and Elliot Fanshel topped Andres Alban and Erik Artursson of the Highlanders, 8-5.

However, NJIT secured the doubles point with an 8-7 (3) win in the third slot for Arnaud Holl and Carl Jedlinski of the home side over Timothy DeSanto and Trevor Haskell of the visitors.

In addition to Schultz and Norregaard in the top two singles spots, Alban topped Nureev at #3, Artursson beat Ortiz, although the Highlander needed to win a tiebreaker to nail down the straight-sets win at #4. NJIT's Holl took down Celso de Vero Rehberger in fifth singles and Jedlinski easily beat DeSanto to complete NJIT's sweep of the singles matchups.

On tap next for NJIT is a Spring Break trip to Virginia for two matches. The Highlanders will visit Norfolk State for a 3 pm match on March 19. A day later they will visit William & Mary in Williamsburg for a 4 pm contest.
