NEWARK, NJ—The NJIT men's tennis team dropped its first match of the 2014 season, as visiting ASA College edged NJIT, 4-3, at The Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility Saturday.
NJIT, which had won its previous five matches, drops to 5-1 on the season, while ASA College, which finished the 2012-13 season with a 14-3 overall mark and ranked No. 2 in the NJCAA/ITA rankings earned its first win of the season by edging NJIT.
In doubles competition, ASA College won two out of three contests to earn the point. NJIT's
Markus Schultz and
Andres Alban were 6-4 winners at first doubles.
In singles competition, NJIT won three out of six singles contests led by Schultz, who was a double-winner on the day topping Avengers Tim SrKala in straight sets, 6-5)3), 6-4.
The other two points for the Highlanders didn't come easy, as sophomore
Erik Artursson and newcomer
Arnaud Holl went the distance at fourth and fifth singles.
Artursson won the first frame, 6-4, at the fourth spot but was downed by the identical score, 6-4, by ASA's Christian Waldron forcing a third set. NJIT's Artusson cruised to a 6-1 victory to earn the point.
Holl, competing at the fifth spot, dropped the first frame, 6-1, but bounced back in the next two sets, 6-4, 6-2 to take the point over Shaq Taylor.
NJIT will return to action on Saturday, February 15, when the Highlanders host La Salle at 10 in The Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility.
