WEST POINT, NY—The NJIT men's tennis team finished strong on the first day at the Army Invitational played at Lichtenberg Tennis Center.
The two-day Army Invitational features Marist, Stony Brook, host Army and NJIT, all be played at Lichtenberg Tennis Center.
On Friday, the Highlanders took three singles matches and two doubles contests, defeating Stony Brook, 4-3, and followed up with two doubles contest victories against Marist. NJIT and Marist will resume play on Saturday and wrap up the singles contests.
In the first match against Stony Brook, Highlanders doubles pair
Markus Schultz and
Andres Alban put together a strong performance, topping Stony Brook's Jose Morales and Alexandre Felisa, 8-7 (5), at first doubles.
Highlander duo
Arnaud Holl and
Carl Jedlinski teamed for an 8-2 victory at the second doubles slot, beating Seawolves Vinicius Degani and Asokummar.
Holl, a junior from Baden, Germany, went the distance at third singles against Stony Brook's Brandon Stone. Holl took the first frame, 6-2, with Stone winning the second set, 6-4. In the final set, Holl came out on top, 10-5, to earn the victory.
Freshman
Richard Rangga, from Clifton, NJ, was a winner for the Highlanders at the fifth slot on a 6-2, 4-6, 10-2, defeat of Kenzo Kauffmann.
Rookie
Luka Kaic, from Belgrade, Serbia, was a straight set winner at the sixth spot, 6-3, 6-2 over Justin Park.
In the Highlanders second match of the day against Marist, NJIT's doubles partners Schultz and Alban were 8-6 winners at the first spot, topping Fredrik Bjerke and Joe Motta.
At third doubles, Rangga and Kaic teamed for an 8-6 victory over Matteo Guidici and Joseph Dube.
Play resumes on Saturday at 9am.
