NEWARK, NJ—The NJIT women's basketball team, which is in a four-game stretch against teams from the Ivy League, will host Harvard at Noon on Wednesday in the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.
The Highlanders will also host NJIT's annual Education Day, where there will be over 550 7th and 8th grade students from various middle schools around New Jersey invited to special events on campus.
NJIT (5-15) is coming off a 48-43 home victory over Brown Saturday, a win that snapped a three-game skid for the Highlanders. Junior guard
Martina Matejcikova led all scorers with 13 points, followed by
Alyssa Albanese with 10 points.
After hosting Harvard on Wednesday, NJIT will close out a three-game homestand by hosting Dartmouth on Saturday at 2pm and then close out the Ivy League schedule on Saturday, January 25 at Penn.
NJIT is led by graduate student
Shakia Robinson, the only double-figure scorer on the Highlander squad, averaging 11.2ppg while ranking second on the team with 6.3rpg. Robinson has scored in double-figures 10 times this season with three double-doubles.
Uju Nwankwo, the Highlanders 6-foot-1 forward, is NJIT's second leading scorer with 8.9ppg and tops the team with 9.2rpg (ranked 71st in the nation) and 32 blocks (88th in the nation). Nwankwo has recorded at least one steal or block in 16 out of 20 games this season.
Matejcikova is averaging 8.2ppg and ranks second on the team with 21 blocks while Albanese ranks fourth with 7.3ppg while leading the Highlanders with 80 assists. Albanese has recorded at least one assist in 19 out of 20 games, while setting a program DI-record 10 assists against Fairleigh Dickinson on December 19, 2013.
Harvard (10-4) visits Newark having won the last four out of five contests, most recently defeating Dartmouth, 73-63, on January 11. Junior forward Temi Fagbenle led Harvard with 21 points, while the Crimson outscored the Big Green by 30 points (52-22) in the paint, while shooting 45.4 percent from the field.
The Crimson are paced by three double-figure scorers –senior guard Christine Clarke (16.9ppg), Temi Fagbenle (13.7ppg) and junior forward Erin McDonnell (11.0ppg).
Fagbenle, a 6-foot-4 forward from London, England, is averaging a double-double (ranked 31
st in the nation) with (13.7ppg) and (10.1rpg) while leading the Crimson in blocked shots (24). She has recorded seven double-doubles through 14 games this season (including five in the last six games).
Harvard ranks first in numerous categories in the Ivy League, both as a team and individually. As a team, Harvard holds the No. 1 spot in free throw percentage (.740) and rebounding offense (43.2) while individually, Fagbenle ranks first in three categories—rebounding (10.1), field goal percentage (.547) and defensive rebounds (7.7).
Visiting Harvard leads the all-time series, 2-0, as the two teams met in 2010 and 2011. In the last meeting in Cambridge, MA, the Crimson defeated the Highlanders, 76-64.
Last season, Harvard finished with a 21-9 overall record, which reached the team to the second round of the 2013 of the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT).
