BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, NY—Sophomore Maggie Niu recorded a match-high 15 kills and Domenique Gerard added eight kills for Saint Francis Brooklyn in the Terriers' 3-0 victory over visiting NJIT Friday evening at the Terrier Invitational.
The Terriers, 2-3 on the young season, won in straight sets Friday, 25-11, 25-17 and 25-21. The Highlanders, who won their season opener Wednesday, blanking Saint Peter's, 3-0, fall to 1-1 on the season.
NJIT will face Howard at 1pm and Rider at 3:30pm on Saturday concluding the Terrier Invitational.
Niu, a 5-foot-11 middle hitter hit .367 for the match with 15 kills, seven digs and four service aces. Gerard combined for a .500 hitting percentage with eight kills, one error on 14 attempts.
Saint Francis Brooklyn used two setters – Kamalei Clifton recorded 16 assists and Kelly O'Halloran added 14 assists.
Libero Feliz Ramirez notched 14 digs while posting a match-high five service aces as the Terriers held a 14-to-2 service ace advantage over the visitors.
Cathy Leung led the Highlanders Friday with five kills, while three different Highlanders added three kills apiece – Camilla Tinari, Valerie Carroll and Danica Vukotic.
Sophomore setter Grace Gao posted 15 assists, while adding seven digs and two service aces for the Highlanders. Libero Katie Goswick notched a match-high 16 digs for NJIT.
In the first frame, the Terriers jumped out to a 10-4 lead and never looked back ,extending the lead to 23-11 on back-to-back service aces by Ramirez. Saint Francis Brooklyn recorded the final two points of the set for a 25-11 victory.
The second set remained close early until 12-10 in favor of the home team. The Terriers scored three consecutive points, pulling ahead 15-10 and later took an 18-12 advantage, prompting an NJIT timeout. NJIT would pull within five of the home team, 22-17, but the Terriers closed out the set on a 3-0 run for a 25-17 victory.
In the final set, the Terriers held a 10-3 advantage early. The Highlanders battled back from down seven to get to within two, 14-12, on a kill by Danica Vukotic. The Highlanders pulled to as close as two points again, 21-19, on a Terrier attacking error, but Saint Francis Brooklyn closed out the set on a 4-2 run for a 25-21 victory.
