EDISON, NJ—The NJIT women's tennis team wrapped up the 2013 season on a positive note, defeating Texas-Pan American, 4-1, in the championship match of the National Invitation Tennis Tournament on Sunday at Thomas A. Edison Park.
The score is the result of the tournament format, which calls for incomplete individual matches to be halted as soon as one team achieves the points necessary to clinch a victory.
The point for doubles is won as soon as one team wins two of the slots and the entire match is over as soon as one team wins four points overall.
The Highlanders, winners of its last six matches, finished the season with a 15-6 overall mark and 10-1 at home in The Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility.
In doubles competition,
Ksenia Kuzmenko and
Jana Luste won 8-3 cruising past Texas-Pan American's Dana Nazarova and Reegan Greenwood at first doubles.
Kuzmenko followed up with a victory at first singles by identical scores, 6-2, 6-2 over Didi Fatchikova. Luste also a double-winner for NJIT, won at fourth singles over Manon Lavrijssen, 6-2, 7-6 (7-1).
Doubles pair
Monika Graff and
Martina Tripcovici won 8-5 at third doubles topping Anastasia Burobina and Manon Lavrijssen. Graff won in straight sets at second singles, 6-3, 6-1.
The lone point for the visiting Broncs came at third singles.
