BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, NY—St. Francis Brooklyn had three players reach double-figures, led by Jasmin Robinson's team-high 13 points and the Terriers held off visiting NJIT, 58-53, Tuesday evening at the Pope Physical Education Center.
St. Francis Brooklyn improved to 4-1 on the young season, with its lone loss coming at St. John's on November 16, while the Highlanders fall 1-6 overall.
In addition to Robinson, St. Francis Brooklyn got 12 points from sophomore guard Leah Fechko and junior forward Jaymee Veney added 10 points.
NJIT's
Uju Nwankwo and
Shakia Robinson each recorded double-figure scoring for NJIT, netting 13 points apiece. Robinson led the game with nine rebounds, as the Highlanders won the battle on the boards, 32-27.
With less than five minutes to play in the game, the Highlanders pulled to within two points of the home team, 51-49, after a layup by freshman
Alana Dudley. Neither team would score over the next two minutes until the 2:07 mark when Jasmin Robinson finished a fast break layup to putt the Terriers ahead by four, 53-49. She followed a minute later by knocking down her only three-pointer of the game, giving the Terriers a seven-point advantage, 56-49.
The Highlanders down but not out, fought back as junior point guard
Alyssa Albanese converted on a layup with 45 seconds and Nwankwo put back a layup of her own ,cutting the Highlander deficit to three, 56-53, with 40 seconds remaining.
St. Francis Brooklyn closed out the game hitting a pair of free throws with 12 seconds left on the clock for a 58-53 victory.
The first half was played close with neither team leading by more than three points until NJIT went on a 5-0 run for an eight-point lead, 15-7, just under the 10-minute mark after a layup by Albanese and a three-pointer by
Denisa Domiterova.
The Terries sank a pair of free throws, pulling within six, 15-9, at the 8:55 mark. But the Highlanders extended the lead to eight on four different occasions, the final at 24-16 at the 4:14 mark after a layup by
Shakia Robinson.
NJIT took its largest lead of the first half when
Alana Dudley sank two free throws with 2:38 remaining for a 28-19 edge. The Terriers rallied to finish out the half on a 5-1 run for a 29-24 halftime score.
NJIT, which has played its last four games on the road, will return home to the Fleisher Athletic Center on Saturday at 12pm, hosting Bucknell.
Bucknell, 3-3 on the season, comes to Newark having won its previous two contests against Cornell and Youngstown State.
In the last meeting between the two teams, Bucknell defeated the Highlanders, 52-35 in Lewisburg, PA on January 8, 2013.
