Men’s Soccer Earns Division I Honors; Drljic Named Defensive Player of the Year

Marko Drljic Named Defensive Player of the Year selected by CollegeSportsMadness

NEWARK, NJ—Five members of the NJIT men's soccer team earned 2013 Madness Independent All-Conference honors headed by Defensive Player of the Year Marko Drljic selected by CollegeSportsMadness.

Drljic, the Highlanders co-captain was joined on the all-conference first-team by Cristian Marcel and Jimmy Myers while Sven Beverst and Philipp Hannemann earned second-team honors.

The 2013 Highlanders finished the season with a 7-9-2 mark, the second-best in the NJIT program's 10-season Division I era. 

Drljic, a junior from Koper, Slovenia, finished the season with a team-leading six goals and four assists for 16 points.  Drljic holds the NJIT Division I record with 11 career assists with one year left of eligibility.

Marcel, a junior from East Setauket, NY, appeared in 16 matches (15 starts) scoring one goal against VMI on September 6.

Myers, a sophomore from Hicksville, NY, played in 17 matches, notching two goals.  Myers scored a goal against Saint Joseph's on October 2 in a 3-3 double overtime match and posted his second goal of the season in the Highlanders 6-0 victory in the season finale at Howard on November 10.  The six goals is the highest single-game goals total in more than 12 years.

Beverst, a freshman from Eggenstein, Germany, played and started in 17 matches.  He recorded two goals and one assist ranking tied for fourth on the team in points (5). Beverst's first collegiate goal was netted on September 15 vs. St. Bonaventure and first collegiate assist was recorded on November 12 at Howard.

Hannemann, a junior from Bayreuth, Germany, appeared in 17 matches (16 starts) recording one assist at St. John's in the Highlanders season opener on August 30.

The staff at College Sports Madness has picked the top players in college soccer for the 2013 season. These players have made significant contributions to their team in during this past season and deserve special recognition.
