Ksenia Kuzmenko and Nathalie Habegger Capture Titles at Warhawk/Panther Invitational

WHITEWATER, WI—NJIT senior Ksenia Kuzmenko and newcomer Nathalie Habegger captured singles titles in their respected flights Saturday at the Warhawk/Panther Invitational hosted by University of Wisconsin Whitewater on the Wangerin Tennis Courts.
 
Kuzmenko, from Moscow, Russia, won all three matches at the Invitational in straight sets.  In the first match of the Invitational, Kuzmenko defeated Ana Jan from Ferris State, 6-1, 6-0.  Kuzmenko followed up with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over UW-Whitewater's Alexandra Bayliss and a 7-6(8), 6-1 win against Northern Illinois' Nelle Youel to earn the title at first singles.
 
Habegger, from Gland, Switzerland, made her college debut on Friday, defeating UW-Whitewater's Brooke Hendricks in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0.  Saturday, Habegger downed Ferris State's Sydney Berens, 6-0, 6-2 and went the distance with UW-Milwaukee's Christina Colarossi, 0-6, 6-4, 10-8 to earn the title at sixth singles.  
 
NJIT's Martina Tripcovici and Jana Luste took third and fourth at second singles. Tripcovici defeated UW-Whitewater's Jackie Vitale, 7-5, 6-4, but fell in her second match in a three-set battle with Grand Valley State's Kali Phillips, 6-0, 5-7, 11-9.  Luste went three sets with Ferris State's Laurence LeBlanc coming out on top, 6-0, 4-6, 10-8 and fell in the next match by identical scores, 6-1, 6-1 to Northern Illinois Hayley Dekking.  NJIT's Tripcovici and Luste faced each other in the final match at second singles with Tripcovici coming out on top, 6-1, 6-3 to take third and Luste fourth.
 
Senior Natalia Melibeu finished third at third singles at the Invitational.  In her first match, Melibeu defeated Grand Valley State's Niki Shipman in straight sets, 7-6(4), 6-1.  The senior from Recife, Brazil dropped a 7-5, 6-2 decision to Northern Illinois' Arantza dela Torre but bounced back with a straight sets victory 7-6(4), 6-4 over UW-Whitewater's Erika Williams.
 
Highlander Carolina Zanotta earned a fifth place finish at fourth singles Saturday.  Zanotta dropped her first set of the Invitational, 6-2, 6-2 to Grand Valley State's Carola Orna.  Zanotta would win her next two matches in straight sets, first topping UW-Whitewater's Hillary Franzen, 6-0, 6-0 and UW-Whitewater's Jackie Vitale, 6-1, 6-0.
 
Hannelore MacDonald finished fourth at fifth singles winning her first match of the Invitational and dropping the final two.  The senior defeated UW-Whitewater's Ashley Miller, 6-1, 7-5 but fell to Northern Illinois Step McDonald and UW-Milwaukee's Kristin Kurer in straight sets.
 
NJIT's Megan Guidry placed fifth at six singles.  Guidry dropped a 6-2, 6-0 decision to UW-Milwaukee's Colarossi, and defeated UW-Whitewater's Rachel Siemon, 6-1, 3-6, 10-5 and Hendricks in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5.
 
The Highlanders will return to action on October 12-14 at the USTA Invitational in Flushing, NY.
