NEWARK, NJ–The NJIT women's tennis team picked up a 4-1 Senior Day victory over visiting Temple Friday morning inside The Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility.
"It was really great to watch the three seniors play today and all win for their last time in Naimoli," said head coach Patricia Piorkowski McDonald. "Temple is a strong team and I was really happy with the disciplined play today."
Doubles play set the tone early, with the No. 1 doubles pair of Laura Wipfli and Irene Cocero earning a solid 6–2 victory over Thamara Frasser Kawaratani and Maria Wang Martinez. The No. 3 doubles pair of Petra Koszo and Lusia Hepcal Barcan followed with another decisive 6–2 win against Nina Andreoni and Yasmin Costa. The No. 2 doubles match featuring Paula Menendez Alvarez and Feyza Aydin against Irmak Ozturk and Tianni Zhou was left unfinished.
In singles competition, the team secured key wins up and down the lineup.
At No. 1 singles,Wipfli battled back after dropping the first set to defeat Irmak Ozturk 3–6, 7–5, 7–5 in a hard-fought three-set match.
Menendez added another point at No. 2 singles with a 6–4, 3–6, 6–3 victory over Thamara Frasser Kawaratani.
Irene Cocero dominated at No. 3 singles, earning a commanding 6–0, 6–4 win against Yasmin Costa.
Matches at No. 5 and No. 6 singles—featuring Aydin versus Tianni Zhou and Lusia Hepcal Barcan versus Maria Wang Martinez—were both unfinished after competitive starts.
