Bucknell’s Romine Leads Bison Past NJIT, 52-35

LEWISBURG, PA—Senior guard Shelby Romine scored a game-high 20 points and pulled down eight rebounds as Bucknell defeated visiting NJIT, 52-35, Tuesday evening at the Sojka Pavilion in women's basketball action.
 
Bucknell, winners of its last four out of seven games improve to 9-6 on the season while the Highlanders, who have faced three consecutive Patriot League opponents, fall to 7-11 on the season.
 
Romine, who was the only Bison to score in double-figures, shot 6-of-13 from the field and went 4-of-10 from behind the arc. 
 
Sophomore forward Audrey Dotson registered nine points and five rebounds while senior forward Lindsay Horbatuk chipped in 10 points and pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds for the Bison.
 
The Highlanders were led by senior Rayven Johnson, who posted her ninth double-double of the season (20th of her career) scoring 10 points and pulling down a game-high 13 rebounds.  Johnson has scored in double-figures in 15 out of 18 games this season.
 
Sophomore guard Sarah Olson added five points while three different Highlanders chipped in four points apiece.  Forward Uju Nwankwo combined for nine rebounds, three blocks and three points in the loss for NJIT.
 
Bucknell opened the contest on a 12-4 spurt sparked by six points from Romine, who knocked down two three-pointers from the left wing while Dotson hit a jumper from the free throw line at the 13:35 mark.
 
Olson connected on a three-pointer for the Highlanders at 13:15 brining the Highlanders to within five, 12-7.
 
Bucknell then extended its lead to nine, 16-7, after four straight points in a span of 1:15 but NJIT's Johnson and Domiterova cut the lead down two after four consecutive points by Johnson and a three-pointer by Domiterova from the corner, for a 16-14 score, just under the 8-minute media.
 
NJIT held the Bison scoreless for the next three minutes until Bucknell's Harris hit one of two from the free throw line at the 5:09 mark, for a 17-14 score. 
 
Bucknell's Harris came back down the floor and knocked down a three-pointer from the corner and Romine answered on the next possession with her third three-pointer of the half for a 23-14 lead with 3:15 remaining in the first period.
 
The Bison held the Highlanders scoreless for the final eight minutes of the first half while Bucknell finished on a 10-0 run in the final four minutes to head into the locker room with a 26-14 lead.
 
Romine led all scorers in the first half with 10 points – nine from behind the arc while NJIT's Johnson led the Highlanders with six points. 
 
Bucknell picked up where they left off in the second half scoring the first three points extending its lead to, 15, 29-14, in the opening 2:45.
 
NJIT's Alyssa Albanese got the Highlanders back on the board at the 18 minute mark with a running layup in the paint, for a 29-16 score.
 
Bucknell then went on a 7-2 run pushing its lead to 18, 36-18 with 14:40 remaining but the Highlanders went on a run of their own, 10-3, from the 12:40 mark to the 7:49 mark slimming the gap to 11, 39-28.  Johnson had four points in the run for the visitors.
 
The home team rallied with a 11-2 spurt sparked by a three-point play by Romine at the 7:22 mark and later widened the Bison lead to 20, with six minutes remaining, 50-30.  Romine had 10 points in a span of 1:22 for the Bison.
 
The Highlanders closed out the final 5:30 on a 5-2 run but the Bison would hold on for a 52-35 victory.
 
NJIT will return to action on Saturday at 2pm when the Highlanders open up Great West Conference play and host Texas-Pan American at the Fleisher Athletic Center.
 
The Highlanders, who received one first-place vote, were selected to finish second in the league, totaling 19 points behind Great West Conference favorite Utah Valley.
 
Texas-Pan American finished third in the preseason poll with 14 points.
