HACKENSACK, NJ—Sophomore Erika Livermore paced Fairleigh Dickinson with a double-double 21 points and 17 rebounds en route to a 67-58 home victory at the Stratis Arena Wednesday evening in women's basketball action.
The Highlanders, who have lost the last four contests' fall to 4-5 on the season while the Knights improve to 2-5 on the season.
NJIT held a three-point advantage, 50-47, after a three-pointer by sophomore
Sarah Olson with 7:18 remaining in the contest but the home team did some damage over the next 6:20 scoring 16 unanswered points for a 13-point advantage, 63-50, with 1:30 remaining on the clock.
The Highlanders finished out the final 1:25 on an 8-4 run but it wasn't enough to overcome the Knights late rally.
Livermore, the Knights sophomore center, led the Knights with 21 points on a 9-of-14 night from the field while grabbing a career-high 17 rebounds pacing the Knights on the glass 50-to-36.
The Knights got 18 points from Danielle Pankey, who scored 13 of her 18 points from the free throw line and forward Desiree Crawford chipped in 10 points and pulled down eight rebounds in the victory.
NJIT was led by Olson, who was one-point shy her career-high, finishing with 24 points. Olson matched her season-high knocking down six three-pointers from behind the arc on nine attempts.
Senior guard
Rayven Johnson posted her fifth double-double of the season (16th of her career) with 14 points and 12 rebounds while junior forward
Uju Nwankwo matched her season-high with 11 points and set a new season-high with eight rebounds. Nwankwo finished 5-for-6 from the floor.
To open the contest, the Highlanders scored the first six points and would extend the lead to nine, 13-4, on a layup by Nwawnko, just five minutes into the game. NJIT held a nine-point advantage up until the 10:06 mark after a jumper by Olson, for a 19-10 lead.
Fairleigh Dickinson scored the next nine points for the games first tie, 19-19, after a layup by Livermore. NJIT's Olson broke the ice with a three-pointer at the 6:23 mark.
After a pair of free throws made by Olson, making the score 23-23 with 4:01 remaining, NJIT scored six points while the home team scored five points in the remaining 3:10 as the Highlanders held a one-point advantage going into the half, 29-28.
Olson led the first stanza with 15 points while Johnson added 12 and for FDU Livermore led the way with 12 points.
In the second half, both teams traded baskets in the opening three minutes with FDU holding a two-point lead, 39-37, after a pair of free throw knocked down by NJIT's Johnson.
FDU's Pankey scored the next three points for a five-point lead, 42-37, at the 15:23 mark, with all her points coming at the free throw line. NJIT's Nwankwo knocked down back-to-back jumpers pulling the Highlanders to within one of the Knights, 42-41, at the 12:30 mark.
The game saw two more ties over the next three minutes, the last a 47 after a layup made by FDU's Torrie Child's, sparking the Knights 16 unanswered points over the next 6:20.
NJIT will return to action on Saturday when the Highlanders host Delaware State at 2pm in the Fleisher Athletic Center.
