Women’s Volleyball Edges Texas-Pan American, 3-2

EDINBURG, TX—The NJIT women's volleyball team, winners of its last three out of four matches, edged Texas-Pan American, 3-2, Monday evening in Great West Conference women's volleyball action.
 
The Highlanders improve to 11-14 overall, 3-4 in the conference while the Broncs fall to 9-17, 2-4 in the conference. 
 
NJIT, which has only lost one match in its last four contests – its lone loss coming at Houston Baptist on November 4 (3-0), dropped its first set Monday to Texas-Pan American, 25-22.  The Highlanders bounced back taking the next two frames, 25-20, 25-23 but the Broncs tied the match at 2-2 with a 25-23 victory in the fourth set.  In the deciding set, the Highlanders ahead 12-11, finished off the set on a 3-1 spurt for a 15-12 victory.
 
In the final set of the match, the visitors fell behind early, 4-1, but rallied back to within one of the Broncs, 7-6, on an attack error by Texas-Pan American.  The home went on a 4-1 run taking an 11-7 advantage.  NJIT then rallied off five straight points pulling ahead of the Broncs, 12-10.  After a point by the home team, NJIT closed out the set on a 3-1 run for a 15-12 victory.
 
The Highlanders had three players reach double-figures Monday led by sophomore Camilla Tinari with a match-high 18 kills.  Freshman Danica Vukotic notched a double-double with 14 kills and 14 digs. 
 
Senior outside hitter Janet Snell, who came into the match with 996 kills, surpasses the 1,000 kill career mark combining for 12 kills Monday. Snell now stands at 1,008 career kills with one regular season contest left on the schedule and the Great West Conference Tournament which will be hosted by Utah Valley from November 16-17.
 
Senior setter Anna Mercado combined for 42 assists and six digs in the victory.  Mercado has now registered double-figure assists in every match played this season (23).  NJIT's Barbara Perru added 16 assists for NJIT.
 
Libero Renata Pandolfo, who ranks seventh in the nation in digs per set (as of October 28), dug-up a match-high 37 assists.  Pandolfo has recorded double-digit digs in every match this season but one (25) with a career-high 44 digs at Lafayette on October 23.
 
In front of the net, freshman Valerie Carroll combined for six total blocks for the Highlanders.
 
Texas-Pan American was led by Michelle McNamee's 16 kills and Diara Reynolds 13 kills and 11 digs Monday.  Setter Nycole Masaki piled up a match-high 51 assists to go along with nine digs and three blocks.  The Broncs has three players reach double-digit digs led by Juri Franzen's 31 digs followed by Krysta Freitas (21) and Reynolds (11).
 
The Highlanders will close out the 2012 regular season on Thursday, November 8 against Utah Valley at 7pm in the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.  In the first meeting of the season, Utah Valley defeated the Highlanders, 3-2.
 
Before the start of the match on Thursday, three seniors will be recognized in pre-game ceremonies – Janet Snell, Anna Mercado and Renata Pandolfo.
