Houston Baptist Blanks Highlanders, 3-0

HOUSTON—Bailey Keith recorded a match-high 15 kills while Heather Leaverton added 14 kills for Houston Baptist in the Huskies 3-0 victory over visiting NJIT Sunday in Great West Conference women's volleyball action at Sharp Gym.
 
Houston Baptist and NJIT were originally scheduled for Saturday but was moved to Sunday at 3 pm at Sharp Gym due to travel delays caused by Hurricane Sandy.
 
The Huskies improve to 18-10 overall, 6-1 in the Great West while the Highlanders fall to 10-14 overall, 2-4 in the league.
 
Keith hit a match-best .429 Sunday with 15 kills, three errors on 28 swings while Leaverton hit .393 notching 14 kills, three errors on 28 attempts for the Huskies.  Leaverton posted a double-double with 14 kills and 12 digs.
 
Huskies setter Victoria Weatherly piled up a match-high 44 assists while Jasmine Casey dug-up a match-best 17 digs.
 
Three Huskies registered three block assists apiece while Esther Longoria recorded a match-best three service aces as the home team held an 8-1 advantage.
 
The Highlanders were led by freshman Danica Vukotic, the only Highlander to post double-figure digits with 10 kills.  Vukotic has recorded double-figure kills in the last eight matches for the Highlanders.  Middle Julia Colombo hit .500 for the match with five kills, one error on eight attempts for the Highlanders.
 
NJIT used two setters Sunday – Anna Mercado recorded 13 assists while Barbara Perru added 10 assists and five digs.  Libero Renata Pandolfo was the only Highlander to post double-figure dig totals with 15, a team-high.
 
NJIT's closet set of the match was in the first frame, which ended 25-21 in favor of the home team.  After a 19-19 tie on a kill by NJIT's Vukotic, the Huskies scored the next three points for a 22-19 lead and finished out the set on a 3-2 run for a 25-21 victory.
 
The Highlanders will have a quick turnaround and travel to Texas-Pan American on Monday, November 5 at 7pm (CT).   In the first meeting of the season in Newark, the Broncs defeated NJIT, 3-1, on September 29.
