NJIT (4-1) has opened the 2012 season with the programs best five-game start since the women's basketball program was elevated to the NCAA Division I level in 2006-07.
The Highlanders are coming off a 73-61 victory over St. Francis Brooklyn on Tuesday, November 20. NJIT trailed by as many as 18, 41-23, with just 1:56 remaining in the first half. The Highlanders went on a 13-0 run sparked by back-to-back three-pointers by
Martina Matejcikova and
Sarah Olson to end the first half, as the Highlanders cut the deficit to five, 41-36, after a pair of free throws by
Uju Nwankwo 2:30 into the second half. NJIT went ahead for good after a layup by Johnson at the 12:03 mark, 49-48.
Johnson, the Great West Conference Preseason first-team honoree, is averaging a double-double this season with 21.6ppg and 11.2rpg while also leading the Highlanders in steals with eight. She has posted double-figures in the Highlanders first five games with three 20-point games and a season-high 25 points against St. Francis Brooklyn on November 20. Johnson also has registered a double-double in four-out-of-five contests for NJIT.
The Highlanders other double-figure scorer is sophomore guard
Sarah Olson with 16.4ppg. Olson is shooting an impressive 53 percent from three-point range (19-of-36) and has posted double-figures in four-out-of-five contests for the Highlanders with a season-high 22 points against St. Francis Brooklyn.
Stony Brook comes into Sunday's contest with a 1-2 overall record and not having played a game in a week, when the Seawolves fell at Morgan State, 66-63, in overtime on November 18.
Trailing by 14 points with 11 minutes remaining in regulation, the Seawolves mounted a 25-11 run to send the game into overtime tied 55-55.
Brittany Snow, the current America East Rookie of the Week, played a crucial role in the comeback, converting a three-point play on a layup and free throw to start the run. The freshman also hit two free throws in overtime to briefly give the Seawolves a 61-59 lead, before Morgan St. battled back to reclaim the game with a three-pointer in the final 10 seconds of OT.
The Highlanders and Seawolves have a common opponent this season with both teams already facing Rider. Stony Brook opened the 2012 season hosting Rider and fell 62-50 while the Highlanders held onto a 53-51 victory at Rider on November 12. Other common opponents are: Fairleigh Dickinson, Saint Peter's, St. Francis Brooklyn and Albany.
Stony Brook is led by
Sabre Proctor, the only Seawolve who is averaging double-figures, with 11ppg.
Jessica Previlon follows behind averaging 8.7ppg and leads the team on the boards with 10rpg.
The Seawolves have out-rebounded their opponents 125-to-93 led by Previlon and
Gerda Gatling who is averaging 6.3rpg.
