NJIT Women’s Basketball Preview vs. St. Francis Brooklyn

NJIT, which opened the 2012 season with two road games, will play its third straight home game of the season on Tuesday hosting St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers at 7pm in the Fleisher Athletic Center.

The Highlanders (3-1) will look to improve to 4-1 on the season Tuesday marking the best start in program history.  NJIT has started off the season with a 3-1 record on two occasions—(2005-06) the final year of Division II competition and (2011-12)—the sixth season the Highlanders competed against Division I opponents.

St. Francis Brooklyn holds a 2-0 all-time record against the Highlanders— 59-36 win on December 22, 2006 in Newark and 58-54 win on November 11, 2011 in Brooklyn Heights.

NJIT is coming off a 90-31 victory over NCAA Division III Rutgers-Newark on Sunday.  Senior guard Rayven Johnson scored 23 points and grabbed 14 rebounds and sophomore guard Sarah Olson scored 20 points, 12 via long 3-pointers in the first six minutes of the game.

The Highlanders are led by Johnson who is averaging a double-double with 20.8ppg and 11.3ppg while shooting 55 percent (32-for-64) from the field and 87 percent (13-for-15) from the free throw line.  Johnson has registered a double-double in three out of four contests and has posted back-to-back 20-point performances in the young season.

NJIT's other double-figure scorer is sophomore guard Sarah Olson with 15ppg.  Olson has scored in double-figures in three out of four contests with two 20-point games.  She leads the team from behind the arc shooting 50 percent (13-for-26).

Senior Melanie Griffin, who is averaging 26 minutes a game contributes 8ppg while junior forward Uju Nwankwo is averaging 7.3ppg and 4.5rpg and shares team-high honors with Nicole Maticka with five blocked shots.

Point guard Alyssa Albanese leads the team with 15 assists while Kimberly Dweck and Johnson have dished out 11.

St. Francis Brooklyn is looking for its first 3-0 start to the season since 1976-77 and 1977-78.  In 96-97, the Terriers started the season 4-0 (all at home) and in 77-78 won five straight victories – four on the road and one at home.

The Terriers are coming off a 69-59 home opener victory over Delaware State on November 16.  St. Francis Brooklyn was led by Jessica Kaufman, who finished with a team-high 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field in 20 minutes of action.

St. Francis Brooklyn is led by two double-figure scorers – Jaymee Veney and Eilidh Simpson.  Veney a sophomore guard leads the team with 12ppg and 17rpg after the opening two contests while Simpson, another sophomore guard, is averaging 11.5ppg.

Jasmin Robinson, a junior guard, ranks third on the team with 8.5ppg and is second with 6rpg while leading the team in assists, with 10.
