FLUSHING, NY – The NJIT men's tennis team opened up the season competing at the 2011 USTA Billie Jean King NTC Invitational this past weekend.
NJIT sophomore Petr Rousar competed in the Singles Flight D falling to Marist's Will Reznek, 6-2, 0-6, 3-10. Rezenk advanced to the finals but was topped by Brown's Will Spector.
Newcomer Holger Norregaard lost in straight sets to Yale's Joel Samaha, 2-6, 1-6 in the Singles Flight E.
Victor Martinez advanced to the semifinals of Singles Flight F defeating Fairleigh Dickinson's Dom Hemy, 6-2, 6-3. In the quarterfinals, Martinez topped Boston College's Matt Wagner 6-7 (7), 6-4, 10-5 but was downed in the semifinals by Columbia's Theodore Marin, 6-0, 7-5.
Teammate Joao Tasca was defeated 6-3, 6-2 by Marist's Matteo Gudici in Flight F.
Bryan Keelan and Ike Kiro both fell in the first round of the Singles Flight G. Keelan lost 0-6, 2-6 to George Washington's Richard Blumenfield while Kiro was topped by Fordham's Pedar Gram, 4-6, 4-6.
Senior Dan Salomon won by identical scores, 6-3, 6-3 in the Singles Flight H against Saint Peter's Fabian Valdvieso. In the quarterfinals, Salomon was downed in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2 by Marist's Jacob Solly.
Fraser Croad also advanced to the quarterfinals of the Singles Flight H defeating St. Francis's Sergio Carvajai, 7-6 (5), 6-4. In the quarterfinals, Croad lost 0-6, 3-6 to Fairfield's RJ Mirabile.
Angelito Mamutuk received a bye in the first round of the Singles Flight I and in the semifinals went the distance with Saint Peter's Luccas Coutinho falling 6-4, 3-6, 10-7.
In doubles competition, Kiro and Norregaad defeated Fairfield's Bjorn Merinder and Dan Sauter 8-3 in the Doubles C Flight. In the quarterfinals, the duo fell 8-2 to Marist's Bill Bishop and Joris Van Eck.
Keelan and Salomon were 8-5 winners over Fairleigh Dickinson's Nikolay Afanasiev and Ryan Zannette in the Doubles D Flight. The pair was topped in the semifinals, 8-2, by Brown's Mike Hill and Dan Hirschberg.
NJIT will return to action at the Hofstra Invitational on October 7-9.
