HEMPSTEAD, NY – Freshman Camilla Tinari posted her second double-double of the season combining for 15 kills and 11 digs as the Highlanders fell 3-1 to Princeton at the Hofstra Invitational Friday afternoon.
Princeton took the first set 25-21 but the Highlanders bounced back quickly with a 25-17 win in the second frame. The Tigers were winners of a close third set, 25-23, and secured the match with a 25-18 victory in the final set.
Tinari, who recorded her first collegiate double-double (15k, 11d) vs. Rutgers on Wednesday, matched her career-high Friday vs. Princeton. Tinari also added a match-high five service aces as the Highlanders held an 11-5 advantage.
Following Tinari's match-high 15 kills was teammate Julia Colombo. Colombo combined for 11 kills on 24 swings and just two errors for a .375 hitting percentage. She added two service aces and one block solo and assist for the Highlanders. Juniors' Renata Pandolfo and Janet Snell recorded nine kills apiece.
Defensively, libero Audrey Snell paced the Highlanders with 20 digs followed by Pandolfo (19), Janet Snell (13) and Tinari (11). Middle blocker Fernanda Lima recorded a team-high five total blocks (two solo, three assists) in front of the next while Janet Snell added three block assists.
Setter Anna Mercado piled up a season-high 42 assists while contributing nine digs for NJIT.
Princeton was led by Sydney Brombal and Chelsea Parker with 12 kills apiece. Parker registered a double-double adding 20 digs. Cathryn Quinn and Nicole Kincade posted nine kills.
Hilary Ford notched a match-high 27 digs while Molly Bagshaw and Ginny Willis split time at the setting position. Bagshaw posted 27 assists and seven digs while Willis added 19 to go along with eight digs.
Three Tigers posted five total blocks – Kincade (one solo, four assists), Quinn and Sarah Hanna (five assists).
The Highlanders will wrap up the Hofstra Invitational on Saturday at 2:30 vs. Fairfield.
NJIT will open up at home on Tuesday, September 6 vs. Lehigh. The match is scheduled to start at 7pm.
