Men’s Tennis Opens Up at 2011 National Independent Tennis Tournament

FARMVILLE, VA –
The NJIT men's tennis team opened up play at the 2011 National Independent Tennis Tournament Friday afternoon on the campus of Longwood University.

 

In the first match of the day for the Highlanders, Seattle (4-15) swept NJIT 4-0 and North Carolina Central (7-9) edged the Highlanders, 4-3.

 

The score is the result of the tournament format, which calls for incomplete individual matches to be halted as soon as one team achieves the points necessary to clinch a victory.

 

The point for doubles is won as soon as one team wins two of the slots and the entire match is over as soon as one team wins four points overall.

 

NJIT vs. Seattle, L, 0-4

 

Seattle started off the match with victories at first and third doubles earning the doubles point.  In singles competition, Seattle won at second, third and fifth singles.

 

NJIT vs. North Carolina Central, L, 3-4

 

North Carolina Central swept the doubles competition and won at first, second and fourth singles to claim a 4-3 victory.

 

NJIT's Fraser Croad defeated Alejandro Espitia 6-3, 6-4 at the third spot while Bryan Keelan and Angelito Mamutuk won in straight sets at fifth and sixth singles. 

 

Keelan topped Johnny Brown, 6-2, 6-0 and Mamutuk won by identical scores 6-1, 6-1 over Christopher Mack.

 

Doubles pair Dan Salomon and Mamutuk were 8-1 winners at third doubles.

 

The Highlanders (9-13) will return to action on Saturday at 8:30am when the team faces host Longwood.
