Tennis Rolls Past Hartford

NEWARK, NJ
– The NJIT men's and women's tennis teams each picked up a win Saturday evening over visiting Hartford in The Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility.  The NJIT women defeated Hartford 5-0 and the men came out on top with a 4-1 victory.

 

The NJIT women, 8-7 on the season, have won its last three matches.  Saturday the Highlanders won the first four singles contests and added an 8-0 victory at first doubles.

 

Freshman Monika Graff topped Hartford's Katina Zampass, 6-2, 6-3 at first singles.  Classmate Hannelore MacDonald followed with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at the second spot while Martina Tripcovici and Megan Guidry won by identical scores at third and fourth singles, 6-0, 6-0.

 

On the men's side, NJIT (7-8) took three out of four singles contests and were 8-2 winners at first doubles.

 

Freshman Petr Rousar went the distance at first singles with Hartford's Aneil Bhalla.  Rousar took the first set 6-2 as Bhalla evened the score with a 6-2 victory of his own in the second set.  Rousar took the match 6-4 in the final frame.

 

Joao Tasca won by identical scores 6-3, 6-3 at the second spot and Ike Kiro playing at third singles won a three-set tilt over Josh Isaacson.  Kiro topped Isaacson in the first set, 7-5, but was downed 6-4 in the second frame.  Kiro answered with a 6-2 win in the third set.

 

Doubles partners Bryan Keelan and Dan Salomon were 8-2 winners at first doubles.

 

Hartford won a fourth singles, 6-1, 0-6, 7-5.

 

The NJIT women return to action on Tuesday when they visit St. Joseph's (PA) at 3:30pm. 

 

The NJIT men will play its final five regular season matches on the road as the Highlanders will visit Hofstra on Saturday, April 2 at 2pm.
