NEWARK, NJ – The NJIT men's tennis team came away with two wins on Saturday defeating Niagara and Wagner in the The Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility on the campus of NJIT.
In the first match of the day, the Highlanders edged Niagara, 4-3. NJIT swept the doubles contests to earn the point and added three victories in singles competition.
Freshman Petr Rousar went the distance at first singles defeating Matt Kane, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4. Sophomore Fraser Croad and Dan Salomon won in straight sets at fourth and fifth singles. Croad was a 6-4, 6-0 winner at the fourth spot while Salomon was victorious at fifth singles, 6-4, 7-5.
Highlander pair Ike Kiro and Martin Cederqvist were 9-7 winners at first doubles followed by an 8-6 win by Rousar, who was a double-winner, teamed with Joao Tasca at second doubles. Croad and Bryan Keelan added an 8-2 win at the third spot.
In the nightcap, the Highlanders won all six singles and all three doubles in sweeping Wagner.
Croad, moving from fourth singles, to the first spot against Wagner, was a 6-0, 6-2 winner followed by Salomon with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at second singles.
Cederqvist defeated Wagner's Yirmeyah Beckles, 6-0, 6-2 at the third spot while Keelan added a 6-1, 6-0 win at fourth singles.
Freshman Angelito Mamutuk won by identical scores at fifth singles, 6-0, 6-0. Kiro won by default at the sixth spot.
Rousar and Rasca picked up an 8-1 win at first doubles and Croad and Keelan blanked Wagner's Beckles and Yuzon at the second spot, 8-0. Salomon and Mamutuk won by default at third doubles.
The Highlanders will break for Spring Break next week and travel to Orlando, Florida. NJIT will face Colgate on Tuesday, Liberty on Wednesday and close out the trip against Bucknell on Thursday.
