Women’s Tennis Takes Two Over the Weekend

NEWARK, NJ – The NJIT women's tennis team went 2-0 this weekend with victories at Fairfield (5-2) and Albany (6-1) improving to 3-1 on the season.

 

The Highlanders traveled to Fairfield on Saturday, sweeping the doubles contests and taking four out of six singles contests from the home team.

 

Doubles pair Nina Mayevska and Jana Luste were 8-6 winners at first doubles followed by an 8-5 victory by Ksenia Kuzmenko and Martina Tripcovici at the second spot.  Monika Graff and Ana Lidon combined for an 8-2 victory at third doubles.

 

Mayveska, competing at second singles was a double-winner on the day defeating Fairfield's Sharissa Ryan, 6-3, 6-4.  Graff won in straight sets at the third spot, 6-4, 6-2 while Hannelore MacDonald fought out a three-set tilt against The Stag's Caroline Emhardt.  MacDonald came out on top 7-5, 4-6, 10-5.  Lidon, the Highlanders captain notched a 6-2, 6-0 victory at sixth singles.

 

On Sunday, the Highlanders defeated Albany, 6-1.

 

Mayevska and Luste started off the match with an 8-2 win at first doubles followed by two 8-3 victories at second and third doubles to earn the doubles point.

 

Mayevska topped Albany's Susan Ma 7-5, 6-4 at first singles and Graff followed with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at second singles, over Laine Mackey.

 

Lidon and Tripcovici won by identical scores – Lidon at the fifth spot (6-4, 6-4) and Tripcovici at the sixth spot (6-2, 6-2).

 

The Highlanders will return to action this weekend at the 2011 ECAC Indoor Women's Tennis Championships, which will be held in Jadwin Gymnasium at Princeton University in Princeton, New Jersey, beginning on Friday, February 18, and concluding with the championship match on Sunday, February 20, at 2:30 p.m. 

Eight teams will compete for the 2011 championship, including two-time defending champion Yale University, Princeton University, Harvard University, Dartmouth College, Brown University, Cornell University, Columbia University, and NJIT. 

On Monday, tournament seeding was announced with host institution Princeton receiving the top overall seed.  They will face eighth seeded NJIT, a newcomer to the ECAC tournament. 

Yale University received the second seed and will face seventh seed Columbia in the first round.  Third seeded Harvard will face sixth seeded Cornell, with fourth seeded Dartmouth College facing fifth seeded Brown to finish out the first day of play.
