Utah Valley Sweeps NJIT at Great West Tournament

GRAND FORKS, ND – Utah Valley, the regular season champions, swept No. 4 NJIT, 3-0 (25-23, 25-9, 25-20), advancing to Saturday's 2011 Great West Conference Women's Volleyball Tournament championship match hosted by University of North Dakota.
 
NJIT closed out the 2011 season with an 11-18 overall record.  Three different Highlanders paced NJIT with nine kills – Janet Snell, Renata Pandolfo and Julia Colombo.  Colombo hit .333 for the match (9k, 2e, 21a).  Janet Snell finished the season leading the Highlanders with 409 kills (3.72kps).
 
Senior Audrey Snell, playing in her final collegiate match, led the Highlanders with 16 digs followed by younger sister Janet Snell with 13 digs.  Cathy Leung added nine. 
 
Libero Audrey Snell notched double-figure totals in every match this season but two with a career-high 37 digs vs. Chicago State on November 12.  For the season, Snell averaged (4.75dps).
 
Setter Anna Mercado piled up 32 assists for the Highlanders.  The junior setter registered double-digit assists in every match this season with a high of 54 on two different occasions – Sept. 11 vs. Dartmouth and Chicago State on Nov. 12.
 
Utah Valley's Chelsey Heaps posted a double-double 10 kills and 10 digs, Jaicee Kuresa combined for 11 kills and Great West Conference Player of the Year Sarah Clement added 10.
 
Great West Conference Setter of the Year Brookelyn Campbell led the match with 38 assists and Katie Fritzler recorded five total blocks (all assists).
 
After battling through 15 ties, Utah Valley used a pair of kills from Clement and a set-closing kill from Campbell to take the initial set
25-23.  
 
NJIT, down 23-21, after a kill by Clement and an NJIT timeout by head coach JR Martins, the Highlanders found themselves within one-point, 23-22, after a Utah Valley attack error.  A kill by Pandolfo, the Highlanders fought back to within one, 24-23, but Utah Valley's Campbell finished the set with a kill for a 25-23 victory.
 
The Wolverines picked up a quick 25-9 victory in the second set led by Kuresa with five kills.
 
In the final set, Utah Valley built a 17-11 lead after a kill by Clemet.  The Highlanders rallied off four straight points pulling within two of the Wolverines, 17-15, on a kill by Janet Snell.  The regular season champions would push its lead to five, 23-18, on a kill by Heaps and seal their spot in the title match on a kill by Clemet, 25-20.
 
Utah Valley will face the winner of No. 2 North Dakota and No. 3 Houston Baptist on Saturday at 5pm (CT).
