Harvard Tops NJIT, 76-64

CAMBRIDGE, MA—Harvard's Brogan Berry scored 16 points and dished out a game-high six assists leading four double-figure scorers as the Crimson defeated visiting NJIT 76-64 in women's basketball non-conference action Sunday afternoon at the Lavietes Pavilion.

 

Harvard, 7-6 on the season, shot 52 percent from behind the arc (14-27) for the game.  Berry, the junior guard, finished 4-for-6 from behind the arc while guard Christine Matera was 3-for-6. Forward Miriam Rutzen, Jasamine Evans and Christine Clark sank two apiece from three-point range.

 

Markley, a 6-foot-3 senior scored 13 points and posted a game-high four blocks.  Matera and Victoria Lippert chipped in 11 points apiece for the Crimson.  Clark was the game-leader with eight boards as Harvard had a 45-23 advantage on the glass.

 

NJIT had two double-figure scorers, led by senior Jessica Gerald, who finished with a game-high 25 points.  Gerald has reached double-figure scoring in the last five-out-of-seven contests with a season-high 25 vs. Harvard.  Sophomore guard Kimberly Dweck matched her career-high with 15 points.

 

The Highlanders connected on a season-high 10 three-pointers led by Gerald with five and Dweck with three.  Freshman Jelena Zoric added two from behind the arc, finishing with six points.

 

Senior forward Ivana Seric chipped in eight points while sophomore Rayven Johnson netted six points and was the team-leader with five rebounds.  Freshman Uju Nwankwo came off the bench for NJIT and filled up the box score with four points, three blocks, three steals and two rebounds in 21 minutes of action.

 

Harvard opened up the contest on a 13-0 run – nine points coming from behind the arc.  The Highlanders got on the board at 14:20 when Gerald ended drought with a three-pointer.

 

The Crimson defense held the Highlanders to single digits up until the 8:22 mark, when NJIT scored consecutive baskets, the first a jumper by Dweck in the paint and Gerald from three-point range, for a 25-10 score.

 

With six minutes remaining in the first half, the Highlanders closed out the half on a 16-9 spurt, led by Gerald's seven points.

 

Gerald was the halftime leader with 13 points while Harvard's Berry scored 11 first half points.

 

Trailing 43-26 at halftime, the Highlanders outscored the home team, 38-33 in the second half.  Harvard took its biggest lead of the contest on a fast break layup by Berry, pushing the Crimson lead to 25, 56-31.

 

The Highlanders rallied for an 11-3 run sparked by Dweck's three-pointer at the 8:31 mark and NJIT slimmed Harvard's lead to 14, 71-57, with 5:03 left to go in the game.  Gerald had six points in the run.

 

Harvard scored on the next two possessions pushing the lead up to 17, after a jumper by Caitlin Rowland and one-of-two made at the free throw line by Lindsay Louie.

 

NJIT (3-10), playing hard till the final buzzer, ended the game on a 7-2 run.

 

The Highlanders will open up Great West Conference play on Wednesday, January 12 “Education Day” when NJIT hosts Texas-Pan American at Noon in the Fleisher Athletic Center.
