NEWARK, NJ—Visiting Rutgers swept NJIT, 3-0 (25-21, 25-10, 25-17) in the first all-time women's volleyball meeting between the schools Tuesday night in the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.

Rutgers (4-3) got a match-best 15 kills and six service aces, plus a team-leading 13 digs from senior outside hitter Caitlin Saxton in scoring the straight-sets win. The visitors had a 10-5 advantage in service aces.

Junior Hannah Curtis added nine kills to the Scarlet Knights attack and junior setter Kallie Pence collected 32 assists for the winners. Rutgers, not especially tall for a team from the Big East Conference, had a 3.5-to-2 team blocking advantage, with Sexton, Curtis, and Pence all posting two block assists apiece.

NJIT (1-5) got the following team-leading totals: sophomore Janet Snell (8 kills); sophomore Anna Mercado (17 assists); junior Audrey Snell (two aces and a match-best 16 digs); and freshman Julia Colombo (2 blocks; 1 solo; 1 assisted). Freshman Katie Bartlett added 12 digs to the Highlanders' defense on the floor.

The first set was the tightest of the night, with NJIT staying close early (6-7), falling back in the middle (6-10 and 11-17), and fighting back for ties at 19, 20, and 21 points, before dropping the last four points of the set, the last two on service aces by Rutgers sophomore Alex Jones.

Rutgers dominated the second set, winning the first four points and going up 10-2, after which it led by at least six the rest of the way, including double-digits from 16-6 on.

The Scarlet Knights continued in control, notching the first five points of the third set, but NJIT battled back and knotted the score at 8-8 on a kill by Janet Snell.

Rutgers answered the challenge with five straight points again, but the Highlanders kept fighting and pulled back within three points three times, the latest at 12-15. The visitors claimed control of the set a final time, spurting 7-1 for a 22-13 lead. NJIT followed with a 4-0 burst of its own, but couldn't get closer than five points before falling, 17-25.

The next action for the Highlanders is Friday and Saturday in a tournament at Long Island University. NJIT will also meet Yale and Georgetown in the LIU tournament
