Box score

PHILADELPHIA
—Saint Joseph's scored one goal in the first half and two in the second, defeating visiting NJIT, 3-0, in non-conference women's soccer Sunday afternoon.

The Hawks, 2-2, broke a scoreless tie in the 28th minute on a shot into the lower left corner of the goal by Carly Salter, assisted by Mo Hawkins.

Saint Joe's pulled away in the second half on a pair of goals by Jen Pfeiffer, her fourth and fifth tallies of the season.

Pfeiffer's first goal of the day, at 47:48, was a header, assisted by Steph Maurer and Taylor Mallory. Pfeiffer later wrapped up the scoring 4:08 from the end, finishing on assists from Lauren Sawyer and Morgan Circe.

Lauren Jancuska, a freshman, made two saves to record her first career shutout in goal for the winners. NJIT's senior keeper, Sadie Mele, stopped six shots.

The overall shots were 20-8 for Saint Joseph's and the shots on goal were 9-2 in favor of the Hawks, who also had five corner kicks to two for the Highlanders.

Sophomore Amanda Dotten accounted for three of NJIT's eight shots on the day.

Saint Joe's got what prove to be the game-winning goal when Hawkins, a freshman, set up Salter, a senior. Hawkins dribbled down the left side and crossed to Salter, who played the ball on the run and scored at 27:45.

The second goal for SJU came early in the second half, whens Maurer, a junior, passed to Mallory, a sophomore, who served the ball into the right side of the box. Pfeiffer then slipped past a defender and headed the goal home less than three minutes into the new period.

Pfeiffer, the 2008 Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Year, scored her 19th career goal to remove all doubt about the outcome in the 86th minute.

NJIT (1-3) will host Wagner on Friday at 7 pm on Lubetkin Field at J. Malcolm Simon Stadium.
