NEWARK
, NJ
—Bryant freshman Ari Goldberg made her first college goal a memorable one, knocking in the game-winner just 1:10 into overtime for the visiting Bulldogs, who defeated NJIT, 2-1, in non-conference women's soccer Friday night on Lubetkin Field at J. Malcolm Simon Stadium.

Goldberg brought the entertaining game to a close when she gained control inside midfield, carried alone for 10 or 15 yards and sent an unstoppable shot about waist high inside the right post from about 25 yards out.

The shot, hit solidly, had a spin on it that made its flight resemble a breaking pitch in baseball and the break helped make a deflection virtually impossible for NJIT goalkeeper Sadie Mele, who stayed on her line.

Bryant, which came in at 0-2, got on the board first with a goal from Kaitlyn Hinck, who finished a nice crossing pass from Katy McAndrew in the 38th minute.

The goal came off of a 3-on-2 break, with McAndrew passing from right wing to the far post, where Hinck, open, fired her in-close shot just under the crossbar into the roof netting.

The 1-0 score held deep into the second half, but NJIT (1-2) pulled even in the 79th minute on an unassisted goal by Michelle Borth.

With the Highlanders applying pressure, the ball came free to Borth, unmarked near the top of the box. The senior, with time to run onto the loose ball, drove a 15-yard laser shot into the back of the net for the equalizer.

Neither team was able to break the tie in the last 11:46 of regulation and after a five-minute break and barely a minute of overtime, Goldberg scored the winner.

NJIT's Mele made seven saves in the Highlanders goal and her counterpart, Kelsi Jacob made four saves for Bryant.

Both evenly matched teams moved the ball well, leading to exciting attacking chances throughout the evening.

The overall shots were 16-11 for Bryant, including 9-5 in shots on goal. NJIT had eight corner kicks to five for the visitors, but none of the re-starts resulted in anything dangerous for either team.

The visitors nearly scored on a quick-developing 3-on-2 in the 31st minute, when Bryant's Hinck got off a hard shot from the right wing. But Mele made the save of the night, a diving deflection over the end line.

NJIT will go on the road next, facing Saint Joseph's in Philadelphia on Sunday a noon.
