Senior GK Sadie Mele makes three saves for NJIT
Box score

NEWARK, NJ—A breakaway goal in the 82nd minute by Wagner's sophomore star Julie Vigliotti sent the visiting Seahawks past NJIT, 1-0, in non-conference women's soccer Friday night on Lubetkin Field at J. Malcolm Simon Stadium.

Wagner is 4-2 on the season, while NJIT falls to 1-4.

The diminutive Vigliotti gave the NJIT defense fits all night with her speed and quickness on the ball and she put the speed on display to break the scoreless tie with less than nine minutes remaining in the second half.

Wagner junior Kaitlyn Llewellyn sent a pass out of the defensive half and Vigliotti, stopped in order to remain onside a couple of yards beyond the center stripe.

The sophomore then played the ball quickly and burst into full sprint, past the defense, and carried alone for 50 yards, before tucking the ball inside the right post beyond the reach of NJIT's sprawling goalkeeper, Sadie Mele.

Vigliotti, whose height is listed at an even five-feet, is the current Northeast Conference Player of the Week, having netted three goals plus two assists in her previous two games, both 4-1 wins for the Seahawks, before getting the game-winner on Friday.

With the Highlanders enjoying a 14-8 advantage in overall shots, Wagner goalkeeper Katie Marcy made seven saves in picking up her second shutout of the season. NJIT's Sadie Mele made three saves, two of which denied what appeared to be sure goals.

The first huge save came in the 18th minute, as Wagner's Briana Vassallo try from 15 yards was turned aside by the diving Mele. The second came in the 38th minute, when Mele denied Jackie Nicholas, who had broken in alone on a quick counter for a shot from inside the box.

NJIT, too, had a couple of big chances that did not find their way into the net.

Amanda Dotten, who leads NJIT in shot attempts (17) and shots on goal (6), took a blast that hit the crossbar in the 26th minute. And Kori Washington took a well-placed, bending shot from the left of the box that was ticketed for the upper right corner of the goal before Wagner's Marcy made her best save of the match.

The Highlanders will play their next three contests on the road, beginning with a match at Mount St. Mary's in Maryland at 1 pm on Sunday.
