JERSEY CITY, NJ—NJIT newcomers Camille Billing and Amanda Redden collected their first college goals, lifting the Highlanders to their first women's soccer victory of 2010, a 2-1 win at Saint Peter's Sunday afternoon on Joseph J. Jaroschak Field.
The Highlanders (1-1) also got the first college assist from freshman Rebecca Tustin, who helped out on Billing's goal, in taking the road win.
NJIT, which won just twice away from home in 2009 and had lost its last two meetings with Saint Peter's by identical 1-0 scores, defied those trends with Sunday's victory, as the Highlanders won their first away game of 2010 and topped their non-conference foes from Jersey City for the first time since 2007.
The teams played a scoreless first half on Sunday, but the Highlanders broke the seal five minutes into the second half, as Billing, who hails from Tecumseh, Ontario, which is near Windsor, the Canadian sister city of Detroit, MI, scored with an assist from Tustin, who is from Haddon Heights, NJ.
NJIT protected the lead for nearly 22 minutes, but Saint Peter's drew even at 71:59 on a goal by junior Samantha Lockhart, assisted by Chloe Zmolek.
Redden, the freshman center midfielder from Hamilton, NJ, scored the game-winner for NJIT, unassisted in the 83rd minute.
NJIT senior Sadie Mele made three saves in posting her first goalkeeping victory of 2010. Caitlin Hoffer of Saint Peter's made three saves in goal for the Peahens.
The shots were 11-9 for Saint Peter's, which also had a slight 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Highlanders are scheduled to host Bryant in another non-conference match on Friday, September 3. That contest is slated for a 7 pm start on Lubetkin Field at J. Malcolm Simon Stadium.
