MADISON, NJ – Freshman Faizah Muhammad had a strong performance for NJIT as the women's fencing team competed at the Drew Invitational this past weekend.
The Highlanders won two out of three matches on Sunday with victories over Maryland, 16-11 and host Drew, 15-12. The lone loss of the day for the Highlanders was against Rutgers, 17-7.
Muhammad, from Maplewood, NJ, went 8-0 on the day for NJIT. She went 3-0 vs. Maryland and Drew and added a 2-0 mark vs. Rutgers.
NJIT 16, Maryland 11
Muhammad, # Kristen Hagen#, # Andrea Camargo and Jennifer Ramos# each combined for a 3-0 record vs. Maryland. # Macarena Maldonado and Kelsey McGowan# picked up two wins each for the Highlanders. The foil squad posted a 9-0 record.
NJIT 15, Drew 12
Four Highlanders posted 3-0 marks vs. Drew followed by a 2-1 record by Hagen. Both epee and foil squads went 6-3 vs. Drew.
Rutgers 17, NJIT 7
Muhammad was the only Highlander to post an undefeated record vs. Rutgers, notching a 2-0 record. Maldonado and Hagen picked up one win apiece.
The Highlanders foil squad finished 16-11 on the day while the epee squad combined for a 13-13 record.
NJIT will return to action on December 5 at the NIFWA Christmas Invitational. The meet will be held at the Cobra Fencing Club in Jersey City, NJ.
