Box score

HAMDEN, CT—Quinnipiac scored once in the first half and then twice in the final 6:19 for a 3-0 non-conference men's soccer win over visiting NJIT Sunday afternoon.

The Bobcats got on the board in the 25th minute on a score by William Cavallo, assisted by Dominic Adams. The goal was a header off of a crossing feed out of the left corner by Adams.

The score held at 1-0 until the 84th minute, when Quinnipiac's Fabricio Silva added an unassisted goal and Dwayne Mars picked up another unassisted goal 32 seconds before the final whistle. All three goals were the first of the year for their respective scorers.

Trailing, 1-0, NJIT had four shots in the second half, but none of them were on target.

Quinnipiac (2-8-1) used two goalkeepers in recording the shutout. George Ellis went the first 46:30 and made four saves, before giving way to Josh Lavallee, who did not make a save or allow a goal over the last 43:30.

NJIT goalkeeper John Ricketti played all 90 minutes and made four saves. NJIT was also credited with a team save.

Quinnipiac, which has six one-goal losses among its eight defeats, outshot NJIT the Highlanders overall, 21-10, including double in shots on goal, 8-4. Quinnipiac had one shot hit the post. The corner kicks were 9-3 for the Bobcats.

“The score line (3-0) was not a true reflection of the game,” opined NJIT coach Pedro Lopes. “I thought it could have been 1-0 either way for the first 70 minutes until we had to chase the game looking for a goal. We put in offensive-minded players and pushed all but one defender forward and (Quinnipiac) did a good job countering and exposing us when we did that.”

The Highlanders (3-8), who went from October 5, when they defeated Rutgers, 1-0, until the Quinnipiac game on October 17, will be back in action quickly now. They will host Lehigh on Tuesday at 7 pm on Lubetkin Field at J. Malcolm Simon Stadium.

Lehigh, 5-5-2 this season, defeated NJIT, 2-1, last October 13 in the first men's soccer meeting between the schools.
