Maritime 5 - NJIT 4 in OT

A hard fought battle with many highlights ended in disappointment when Maritime came back from a 4-2 deficit to tie the game in the last minute of regulation and win it in overtime.

Although the Highlanders had the edge for the first half of the game, Maritime took the lead with a pair of goals in the 2nd period.  Trailing 2-0 the visitors shook off their "bus legs" and got to work.

Sophomore Mike Melillo (1 goal) scored the first Highlander goal of the year off a nice feed from freshman Alex Guimaraes to make it 2-1.   Shortly afterwards Stanley Pilny (1 assist), another freshman, gained the zone and fed Nick Naumovski (1 assist) with a beautiful pass in traffic that resulted in a hard shot and a rebound that James Wintjen (1 goal) converted into the tying goal as he slid the puck through the five-hole.

Midway through the 3rd period Kevin McMorrow (1 goal), Andrew Sindt and Guimaraes worked the puck down low to create some good scoring opportunities and were rewarded when Kevin slammed home a rebound for the lead.

On the very next shift newcomer Jason Anagnos, along with veterans Andrew Kaczur (1 assist) and Colin McArdle (1 goal), applied tremendous forechecking pressure causing a turnover that Colin quickly seized and deposited into the net on a sweet wrap-a-round play.

Everything seemed under control as the Highlanders, with sophomore Yllano Tubilleja in net (28 shots, 5 goals against), had the lead and the depth to finish off the game.  However, Maritime was not done yet.  Not by a long shot.

With the Highlanders down a man and their goaltender pulled, Maritime scored a power play goal to cut the lead to 4-3 with 49 seconds to play.  With a regained confidence they pulled the goaltender again - and again it worked as the tied the game with 5 seconds to go.

The ensuing 4 vs. 4 overtime lasted only a little more than a minute as Maritime scored their 3rd goal in less than 2 minutes to steal the game back.

Next up is the Highlanders inaugural game in the Great Northeast Collegiate Hockey Conference, with a game in Lancaster, PA against Millersville.
