HOUSTON, TX – Sophomore outside hitter Renata Pandolfo posted a match-high 15 kills and 14 digs, leading New Jersey Institute of Technology to a 3-0 sweep in the first-ever women's volleyball Great West Conference match-up over Texas-Pan American Friday night at Sharp Gymnasium on the campus of Houston Baptist University.
NJIT (10-5, 1-0 GWC) started out the match taking the first two sets 25-13, 25-14. The Highlanders went back and forth with the Broncs (3-10, 1-2 GWC) in set three but pulled out a 25-23 win in the final set of the match.
Pandolfo, the Highlanders co-captain, was simply too much for the Broncs, leading NJIT with 15 kills on 39 attempts with three errors with a hitting percentage of .308 for the match.
Also contributing to the Highlanders offense was senior Kristy Haeckel and junior Baaba Hughes each notching nine kills. Haeckel recorded a match-high three blocks (1 solo, 2 assists).
Senior setter Erica Schultz recorded her eighth double-double of the year piling up a match-high 31 assists and 13 digs, playing all three sets as the setter for the Highlanders.
Senior Sabrina Baby, who is the NCAA Division I national individual leader in digs per sets posted a match-high 18 digs. Baby has reached double-figures in all 15 matches for the Highlanders, with a season-high of 41 digs against Fairleigh Dickinson on September 2.
Following behind Baby was Pandolfo (14), Schultz (13), Haeckel and senior Katrina Hornstein with six.
NJIT took a 9-1 advantage in service aces led by Hornstein (3) and Haeckel and Hughes with two.
Texas-Pan American got a team-high 13 kills from junior Marci Logan while Kaitlin Vasquez and Rebecca Toddy registered 12 digs apiece. Setter Rita Gonzalez produced 11 assists.
The Highlanders will return to action on Saturday when they face Houston Baptist in a Great West Conference match-up at 2:00pm (CT).
