NJIT’s Sabrina Baby Great West Conference Defensive Player of the Week

Senior libero Sabrina Baby

NAPERVILLE, IL -- New Jersey Institute of Technology senior Sabrina Baby is the latest Great West Conference women's volleyball Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday evening.

North Dakota's Devin Trefz earned Player of the Week honors leading her team past two Great West Conference opponents, Houston Baptist and Texas-Pan American.  Trefz has led North Dakota in kills in 11 of 12 matches and has a total of 166 kills on the season.

Baby, who earned Great West Conference Defensive Player of the Week on September 9, compiled 97 digs (7.46 dpg) in four matches last week for the Highlanders.

The senior libero from Florianopolis, Brazil had a strong night on defense against Columbia (Tuesday), leading all players with 28 digs while adding 33 digs with no errors in a 3-1 loss to Hofstra (Saturday) at the Seton Hall Invitational.

For the season, Baby leads the team with 305 digs (6.78 dpg) while recording double-digit figures in all 14 matches.  Baby recorded one 40-dig night, shattering her own school Division I record for digs in a four-set match, getting 41 against Fairleigh Dickinson (Sept. 2) surpassing her old mark with 32 in four sets vs. Harvard in 2007.

The Highlanders return to action on Friday when they kickoff their conference play against Texas-Pan American.  The match will be played at Houston Baptist University starting at 5:00pm (CT).  NJIT will take on Houston Baptist on Saturday at 2:00pm (CT).
