OREM, UT – Senior point guard Jackie McCaffrey scored a game-high 17 points to lead New Jersey Institute of Technology, 49-45, over Texas-Pan American in the women's basketball season finale for both teams at the Division I Independent Tournament at The McKay Center Saturday afternoon.
McCaffrey, who was 6-for-11 from the field and 2-for-4 from behind the arc was backed up by sophomore forward Ivana Seric's 10 points.
NJIT, which split the season series with Texas-Pan American (the Highlanders won the first meeting 69-54, on January 24 in Newark) got eight points apiece from Jill Dickinson and Taiwo Oyelola.
Highlanders Taiwo Oyelola and Seric combined for 14 rebounds but Texas-Pan American had a slight advantage on the boards, 35-33, led by a game-high 10 rebounds from Rose Esther Jean.
Texas-Pan American got eight points and nine rebounds from Brittany Demery who came off the bench and seven points from senior Teshay Winfrey. Jean dished out a game-high six assists for the Broncs.
NJIT's Dickinson opened up the contest sinking the first bucket of the game from behind the three point line at 17:44 and the Highlanders took a 10-point lead, 14-4, on a lay-up by McCaffrey at the 10:18 mark.
Texas-Pan American answered with an 11-0 run over the next four minutes sparked by Epiphany Smith's three-pointer at 9:55 and went ahead at 5:39 on a lay-up by Sherrell Davis, 15-14.
The Highlanders would regain the lead, 19-15, converting on its next two possessions down the floor after McCaffrey's three-pointer and Seric's lay-up with 4:04 left in the first half.
Texas-Pan American's Demery hit a jumper at 2:09, bringing her team within two points, as teammate Danielle Kostacky tied the game at 21, hitting a shot from the baseline with 32 seconds to end the half.
NJIT's McCaffrey led all scorers at halftime with 12 points.
The game stayed tight well into the second half, with neither team able to take a lead bigger than three points until NJIT went up four, 41-37, on Taiwo Oyelola's jump shot at 6:22.
The Highlanders took its final lead of the contest when Seric finished a lay-up, putting her team up 45-41 with 1:19 left in the game. NJIT took a six-point lead on free throws made by McCaffrey with 56 seconds left but Texas-Pan American's Winfrey hit a crucial basket with 42 seconds left on the clock hitting a three-pointer, pulling her team within two of the Highlanders.
NJIT's Kehinde Oyelola, who was named to the Division I Independent all-Tournament team, put the game away hitting two free throws with nine seconds left closing out the game, 49-45.
Dickinson ends her career second on NJIT's all-time career list in three-point field goals (171); third in three-point attempts (506) and games played (111) and seventh in free throw percentage (70 percent).
McCaffrey finishes out her career ranking first on NJIT's all-time list (115) games played; second with (342) assists and (203) steals and fourth in free throw percentage (72 percent).
She holds the individual single-game record for assists, dishing out 13 against Nyack on February 25, 2005.
