EDINBURG, TX -- Senior forward Robin Garrett scored 18 points to lead a balanced offense for Texas-Pan American, as the Broncs defeated New Jersey Institute of Technology, 68-56, in women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
Garrett, who scored nine points in each half, was one of three double-figure scorers for Texas-Pan American, which had two additional players with six points each.
The other double-figure scorers were freshman guard Epiphany Smith and senior Teshay Winfrey, with 14 points apiece. Danielle Kostacky and Rose Esther Jean each added six points. Seniors Garrett and Winfrey, led the Broncs on the boards with five rebounds. Broncs point guard Smith, dished out a game-high five assists.
NJIT, lost despite having three double-figure scorers. Senior point guard Jackie McCaffrey and junior forward Kehinde Oyelola netted 12 points apiece while Taiwo Oyelola, who came off the bench, added 10 points. Senior Jill Dickinson chipped in nine points, all in the second half from behind the arc.
Highlander Kehinde Oyelola took game honors in rebounds, with seven, as Texas-Pan American had a slight advantage on the boards, 33-28.
Garrett scored four of Texas-Pan American's first seven points in the opening 3:04, and the Broncs eventually built a 19-5 lead on Kostacky's three-pointer with 10:17 left in the first half.
But NJIT fought back and pulled the score within nine points on a three-pointer by Kehinde Oyelola from the top of the key, 21-12. The home team took its biggest lead of the first half at 2:32, on Kostacky's second three-pointer of the half giving her team a 37-18 advantage.
Leading 39-23 at half, the Broncs opened up the second half on fire scoring the first eight points making the score 47-23. The Highlanders scored the next 13 points, trimming the deficit to 11, 47-36, with 15:10 on the clock.
The Highlanders found themselves down eight, 55-47, on a fast break layup by McCaffrey with 6:59 left but the Broncs answered with back-to-back buckets pushing the lead to 13 on a jumper in the paint by Garrett.
A three-pointer by NJIT's Kehinde Oyelola at 1:57 made the score 64-56, but it wasn't enough as the Broncs scored the final four points in the last 1:22 for a 68-56 final score.
The Highlanders will play their final home game of the season on Tuesday night at 7 pm, when they host Savannah State in the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.
Tuesday's game will mark the final home contests for Jackie McCaffrey and Jill Dickinson.
