Longwood Defeats Highlanders, 2-1

– Longwood's Alex Myers scored the game-winning goal at 70:08 leading the Lancers 2-1 past visiting New Jersey Institute of Technology Sunday afternoon at the Athletics Complex in the final regular season match for both teams.

 

Myers, a junior, received the pass from freshman Lindsey Ottavio in the center of the box and finished the play for the game-winner.

 

NJIT opened up the scoring less than 10 minutes into the match on a goal scored by junior #Kori Washington#, assisted by freshman Gechi Ukaegbu.  Washington took a pass from Ukaegbu beating Longwood goalkeeper to the outside for her team-leading fourth goal.

 

The Lancers drew even at 41:23 by senior Tia Nardella's shot to the far post.  Nardella got behind the NJIT defense pulling Longwood even with the Highlanders, 1-1.

 

Longwood's goalkeeper Marcia Biddle recorded the victory making one save while NJIT's Sadie Mele made seven stops, one on a penalty kick in the 62nd minute by Jessica Varela.

 

NJIT will host the Great West Conference Women's Soccer Championships, starting on Friday, November 6.  Play will continue on Saturday, November 7 with two semifinal contests and the championship match on Monday, November 9.

 

NJIT, the top seed in the East Division will face the West Division's fourth seed, North Dakota.  Utah Valley is the top seed in the West Division and will take on Delaware State, who is seeded fourth in the East Division.

 

Houston Baptist will face South Carolina State, the third seed from the East Division while South Dakota will play the East's second seed, Howard.
