Dickinson Leads NJIT Past Texas-Pan American, 69-54

Highlanders have three-double figure scorers in victory

NEWARK, NJ – Senior guard Jill Dickinson produced a game-high 22 points for New Jersey Institute of Technology, to pace the Highlanders' 69-54 win over visiting Texas-Pan American in the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.

 

Dickinson, the fourth-leading scorer on the team posted a season-high with Saturday's performance, which saw her lead all scorers at halftime, with 12 points, before netting 10 second-half points.  The 5-foot-9 guard went 7-for-11 from the field while shooting 5-for-8 from long range.  The five three-pointers made this afternoon for Dickinson ties her career-high, which she accomplished on February 3, 2007 against Texas-Pan American.

 

Kehinde Oyelola another double-figure scorer for NJIT, added in 15 points. She made five of nine three-point shots in the game setting a new personal-best.  Forward Taiwo Oyelola chipped in 12 points coming off the bench for the Highlanders.

 

Taiwo shared game-high honors with Texas-Pan American's Brittany Demery pulling down nine rebounds.  Senior co-captain Jackie McCaffrey dished out a game-high six assists as the Highlanders combined for 16 assists as a team – four shy the Division I record.

 

Freshman guard Epiphany Smith led Texas-Pan American with 11 points--seven of which came in the second half.  Smith was 4-for-4 from the free throw line.

 

Junior Aleeya Grigsby chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds for the Broncs while senior Teshay Winfrey contributed nine points, as the Broncs fall to 11-10 on the year.

 

NJIT, which led at halftime, 30-25, built a 19-point lead, 54-35, on Kehinde Oyelola's rare four-point play with 13:11 left in the game. The Highlanders took its biggest lead of the game at 10:46 on a fast break lay-up by junior Katie Piekielski, 60-35.

 

NJIT shot 12-for-28 (42.9 percent) from behind the three-point line, setting a new Division I record for three-point field goals made.  The Highlanders old mark of 10 was shot against Texas-Pan American on January 28, 2008.

 

Texas-Pan American struck first with a three-pointer by Winfrey at 19:42 but NJIT answered with a three-pointer of its own by Kehinde Oyelola from the top of the key.

 

The visitors would score the next four points taking a four point lead 7-3.  Dickinson's three brought NJIT within one, and went ahead on free throws sank by Jessica Gerald at 16:05, 8-7.

 

The game saw five ties, the fifth coming at 4:17 on a jumper by Bronc's Marah Guzman knotting the game at 25.  NJIT went ahead for good on two free throws sank by its senior Dickinson with 3:44 remaining.  McCaffrey's fast break lay-up from Dickinson with 1:41 closed out the half putting NJIT up five, 30-25.

 

The Highlanders will visit Bryant in Smithfield, RI, on Wednesday in a 7 pm start.  This will be the first meeting between the two teams.
